Arrested Development - Tennessee | Insomniacs Club

Tennessee - one of the many college ball teams that's made it a habit of crippling my bracket. Oddly enough, I'm the current leader in my Yahoo! Group. I guess we're all in the same boat this year.

Hip Hop Is Read: Drum Kits

Effective immediately, Hip Hop Is Read: Drum Kits is the new home for all of those kits I posted back in 2008. Many of the links went down. Now they're back up, with twin mirrors for each download (I roll with Hotfile now as well, get familiar). There's nothing too spectacular about these sets. Veteran producers might laugh at them. But they're invaluable to newbs, myself included. Enjoy! Hit me up on the cbox for any comments, suggestions and re-up requests. Uno.

TC Beats - Intellectual Chaos

A couple of months ago, I told you about TC Beats, a 17-year old producer from The Mill City, who had just whipped up a beat tape called Emmanuelle Chriqui Broke my H.E.A.R.T.. Two months later, he's back with Intellectual Chaos, cover art by yours truly...
These are all songs that I've made from Valentine's Day until basically March 24. I made it because I was hungry to come back out after my first beat tape. I made tons of beats but these were the luck 14 that happened to make my list!!

REL - Orchestration: An Instrumental Collage (Mixed by DJ Haylow)

Produced by REL and mixed by DJ Haylow, Orchestration is an instrumental beat tape that's more like an aural trip to space than anything else. I'll let 'em tell it:
Not to be classified as an ordinary mixtape or producers beat CD, Orchestration is unparalleled.

Created on the premise of an orchestral score, producer REL and DJ Haylow collaborate to bring you a truly unique interpretation of Hip Hop instrumentalism. The Orchestration project contains over 30 instrumentals produced solely by REL, who displays a range in sound that is distinct and can be appreciated by any music aficionado.

DJ Haylow has an extensive mixtape catalog, but he approached this assignment from an unfamiliar angle. Playing the role as the "conductor", Haylow blends, tweaks, and manipulates REL's production to give the Orchestration project a cohesive refinement that is worthy of it's own musical genre.

With REL as the arranger and DJ Haylow as the conductor, Orchestration is the contemporary model for Hip Hop instrumentation.

Clearly, Eliza Dushku Reads HHIR

Didn't I just post this song for Insomniacs Club? Didn't we just talk about pedophilia and the meaning of the word 'Nonce' in the UK? It's all too convenient if you ask me...

Health Care Bill a Victory for Barack Obama, Democrats and the Nation

While it’s not the bill I would have preferred – the public option woulda been good (talks are still on the table for an upcoming vote), and single payer woulda been great – I must say that I’m proud to see the Democratic party standing firm in their fight for any sort of health care and health insurance reform. It really was a historic day in our nation’s history. For several decades, presidents have fought for this… and now, it’s here. As I chided on Twitter, Barack Obama’s slogan for his 2012 reelection campaign should read as follows: “Hi, I’m Barack Obama and I get. Shit. Done!”

Many of the president’s critics have blamed him for not being strong enough to get his proposed goals accomplished. I have been one of those critics. And tonight, I’ve had to eat some of those words. Did it take Obama too long to pass health care reform? The past year says “yes”; history says “no.” He’s only managed to do what no other president has ever done, and for that, he deserves some props. Nancy Pelosi deserves her due credit as well. Republican congressmen better be thanking their lucky stars that they’ve already got health insurance, because their asses are gonna be hurting in the morning. :D

On the other side of the globe, France’s Socialist Party gave President Nicolas Sarkozy and the conservatives quite a beating in the polls, a potential sneak peek at what’s to come in the country’s 2012 presidential elections in which Sarkozy will be seeking reelection. It seems like Bernard-Henri Lévy got it wrong after all. :D

Above the Law - Untouchable | Insomniacs Club

Artist: Above the Law
Song: "Untouchable"
Album: Livin' Like Hustlers (1990)

Sometimes Howard Stern Hits the Nail on the Head...

...and other times he comes off sounding like a fucking tool. The Democrats are communists? You know, last time I checked, the Democrats were putting together a bill that was essentially a blowjob to the health insurance companies. Last time I checked, most of the Democrats, like the Republicans, were corporate prostitutes. If only politicians were required to wear the logos of the companies that pay them, much like NASCAR drivers do. If the leading party in the United States was the Communist Party, the FCC would be the last thing on Howard Stern's mind. He'd be too busy trying to keep his head off of a pike.

The BeatTips Manual by Amir “Sa’id” Said | Review

Full Disclosure: I’ve contributed to Amir “Sa’id” Said’s website, BeatTips. Admittedly, I only wrote one article (a Pete Rock album review), but it’s still worth mentioning. I may be “just a blogger”, but I’ve still got some journalistic integrity.
~

If rap was a game, Big L would be MVP. If rap was a university, The BeatTips Manual would be required reading. Scratch that. Amir “Sa’id” Said’s beatmaking opus has already earned that status at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts for the university’s course on hip hop/rap music production. Rightfully so, The BeatTips Manual earns its stripes as a legitimate textbook, accessible to students at college and students of the game alike.

The BeatTips Manual begins with an all-encompassing look at the genesis of hip hop and the birth of beatmaking. From the offset, the author’s respect for hip hop as an artform is evident. As a sample-based producer, Sa’id fulfills his obligations to highlight hip hop’s influences, both culturally and musically. What’s especially unique about this guide is Sa’id’s introductions and explanations on topics concerning musical theory, written with a style that’s both technical and comprehensible, satisfying production vets and newcomers alike. Sa’id’s crash course on beat composition will serve as an invaluable compass for novices, but The BeatTips Manual provides a wealth of knowledge to beatmakers of all levels of experience.

Guiding the reader through the nitty gritty of both artistic and business angles of beatmaking, Sa’id offers tips and tricks of the trade, the best equipment to look for, and of course, valuable production techniques. His discussions with super producers like Marley Marl, DJ Premier and Buckwild, for instance, are particularly eye opening. Few interviews with these artists ever delve into the brass tacks of beat composition to this detail. Additional sections on shopping beats, sampling laws, and tips on maneuvering through the music industry are all essential reading for anybody who is serious about taking their hip hop hobby to new levels.

Detailed and thorough, I'd consider The BeatTips Manual to be the go-to guide for beatmaking. Highly recommended!

Eye Know (Ukulele Cover)

I just discovered this De La cover on YouTube and was blown away - I had to post it. As a general rule, I'm a sucker for acoustic renditions of rap favorites, but this is by far one of the most original covers I've ever heard. You might even say it's De La Heavenly.

Public Enemy - Black Steel In the Hour of Chaos | Insomniacs Club

Chris Hansen Would Like a Word with Me(?)

I’m gonna need a late pass on this one: About a month ago, Ich Lüge Bullets published a post about your truly. Hilarity ensues:
So anyway, in between its usual award-winning mix of K’Naan MP3s and Jewish self-loathing, Hip Hop Is Read recently contained this little post. The “HHH” in question refers to “hot Hebrew honey”, rather than pro-wrestling’s favourite Lemmy fanboy.

Now, Michelle Trachtenberg was born in 1985. Harriet the Spy was filmed in 1995, when Trachtenberg was 10-years-old. Let me repeat that: 10-years-old. I mean, yeah, this is the internet and we’re all kinda used to dudes making with the lech comments over Hillary Duff or Evanna Lynch as they enter the flush of womanhood and before they become heroin addicts, but… 10-YEARS-OLD. Just think, next time you download a sample set off of that guy, you’re downloading MP3s compiled by a man who wants to fuck pre-teens. It’s up to you to decide whether that’s something you want on your conscience.
The post was titled 'Which rap blogger wants to have sex with a 10-year-old girl?'. ROFLCopter! Rafi’s comment pretty much sums up my position. Still… El. Oh. El. (The funniest part of it all might just be one of the post labels: ‘Hip Hop Is Paed’) Props to Dom for making me laugh, even if it’s at my own expense.

UPDATE: Check out this hilarious Chris Hansen soundboard.

Meth, Ghost & Rae - Prelude to the Massacre

Original Artwork Here!

This 'HHIR Exclusive' has been 99% complete since 2009, around the time when it was first announced that Method Man, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon the Chef would be putting out an album together. So what have I been waiting for? The "official" group name, of course. All along, I was rooting for 'The Brothers from the Grain', but I suppose 'Meth, Ghost & Rae' will do.

The idea for this compilation came from the question: "How many times have all three of these emcees been featured on the same track?" This set just might have the answer (if I'm missing anything, lemme know). Almost all of these songs come from Method Man, Ghostface, Raekwon and Wu-Tang Clan albums. Support the music and enjoy:
