Mos Dub, Produced by Max Tannone

Mashup albums have been a dime a dozen since the mid-2000s. Back in 2003/2004, when Jay-Z released The Black Album's acapellas, everybody and their grandma had their own remix album. Some, like The Grey Album, made some serious noise and have stood the test of time; most have not. One of the albums to fit into the rare, former group is Jaydiohead, a Jay-Z/Radiohead mashup released on January 1st, 2009. Produced by Max Tannone, a New York DJ, Jaydiohead effectively delivered a hipster's dream come true.

Well now Max is back with a new mashup record: Mos Dub, mixing Mos Def's groovy raps with classic dub reggae cuts. Burn one:

Nneka - Concrete Jungle | First Peek

Release Date: February 2, 2010
Label: Decon Records

Though she's been active on the scene since 2005, it was only until I heard J.Period's The Madness (Onye-Ala) Mixtape that I "discovered" Nneka. She's been compared to artists like Erykah Badu and Floetry, but she's definitely got a unique style of her own. It's refreshing to find artists who shun the hype and make natural and honest music.

Sample & Example: Mulatu Astatke, Nas & Damian Marley

I've been excited about this Nas/Damian Marley album for a minute and the first leak, a snippet of a song called "Afro Beat", sounds really promising. Nas and Mr. Tuff Gong have an obvious chemistry and the beat is really dope. As I was listening to "Afro Beat", I could swear that the sample sounded really familiar. I listened to it a few more times before I recognized it - I'd been listening to the original song earlier in the day.

It's a song by Ethiopian jazz artist Mulatu Astatke entitled "Yegelle Tzeta". The original song is excellent, check it out below. And school yourself on Mulatu here.

The Miseducation of... [The Samples]

As soon as I dropped the set for Lyte's debut album, I knew I had to follow it up with a prerequisite: Ms. Hill's own solo debut record. You'll be drawn into this set straight from the get-go with the vibes of "Bam Bam", interpolated flawlessly on the classic "Lost Ones". And you can tell that Lady Hill is something of a Wu-fan with the inclusion of some samples on both "Ex-Factor" and the loops of "I Used to Love Him". Fans of "Doo Wop (That Thing)" won't be disappointed because we've got a brief-but-important cut from The 5th Dimension that just might blow your mind. But my favorite sample from this set has got to be the rootsy vibes off of Jose Feliciano's "And the Feeling's Good" used on Hill's poignant "To Zion". That acoustic sample is something else... Anyways, I hope you enjoy this set as much as I did putting it together for you. Don't forget to... turn it up!!

M.I.A. - Kala [The Samples]

Thanks to Pineapple Express and the plethora of emcees who have rapped atop "Paper Planes" (Bun B & Rich Boy are the first to be credited for this as far as I know), M.I.A.'s 2007 release Kala is making noise once again. I never would have tried to tackle a sample set for this kinda album back in '07 (when we started this f*ckin' sample set trend with the American Gangster samples), but I feel good about it now, so here we are: Kala samples! Crazy sh*t! This mix is by far the most diverse sample set we've ever dropped. I doubt you've heard half of these songs. As always, cop 'n enjoy. I know you'll do both!

EPMD - Strictly Business [The Samples]

Released in 1988, Strictly Business was EPMD's debut album, a classic album. Just 10 tracks long (short?), Strictly Business was just that: straight to the point, effective. I'd call this album 'flawless'. Hands down one of the most perfect hip hop albums in existence. Erick & Parrish laid down some heat on the mic, and the production was top-notch as well. Released back when sample-usage was boundless, EPMD created a musical collage drawing from a wide spectrum of influences from several genres, many of them completely unexpected -- but never out of place! With 90+ minutes worth of sample material, this one's got everything from Clapton to Zapp, Steve Miller to Rick James -- and many, many more. Soak it all up and kick back to this classic sample set, 'cause you gots to chillll!

Havin' a little fun:
