Every once in a while, MC Shan, an emcee I greatly respect, drops some mad-ignorant rants on Facebook. It's hilarious. Here's his most recent one:

Had to post this. Cooper's journalistic evisceration of Berman's lethargic conspiracies was a delight to behold. Enjoy.

Hip Hop Is Read's California Voting Guide 2010

I'd make a pretty good dictator... Woody Allen knows what's up.

I'm certainly not as enthusiastic to vote as I was in 2008. And I can also be a cynical douche from time to time (read: most of the time), but voting actually does make a difference. If you'd rather send Meg Whitman to Sacramento than Jerry Brown, you are really dumb. For real. Word to Antoine.

First things first, the candidates I care about seeing win:
Jerry Brown, Governor
Barbara Boxer, Senator
Gavin Newsom, Lieutenant Governor
Debra Bowen, Secretary of State
Kamala D. Harris, Attorney General
Tom Torlakson, Superintendent of Public Instruction

And now, on to the propositions:

Prop 19 This one's a no-brainer. But as I wrote a few months back, the "movement" to legalize marijuana is sadly spearheaded by... no-brainers. For fuck's sake, the strongest vocal supporters of prop 19 in the hip hop "community" have been Asher Roth and Wale - two perennial losers. Prop 19 should pass because it's ridiculous to allow drug cartels to maintain their free reign; because it'd clear out the prison population of non-violent offenders. Prop 19 won't pass because the powers that be want to maintain those drug cartels; because the prison industrial complex benefits greatly from crowded prisons. A few months back, the polling on Prop 19 was doing pretty well. In the past month or so, the tides have shifted and it seems as if Prop 19 will simply go up in smoke. What's sad about this is that even the Democrats are against Prop 19. No "credible" politician will outrightly support it... in California. I'm still voting yes on Prop 19, hoping for a mary jane miracle.

Prop 20 This one's being funded by a wealthy guy (read: Republican) who seeks to impose new congressional redistricting that would ultimately reduce the number of House seats held by Democrats. Now, look. The Democrats are major fuck ups. But the lesser of two evils ought to prevail, and I'm moving if California ever turns red. No on Prop 20.

Prop 21 This proposition seeks to save state parks, keeping them open and free of charge. Can you imagine a world in which you'd need to pay an admission fee to see some redwoods upstate? Madness. In exchange, the vehicle registration fee is bumped up an extra $18 a year - a price I'm willing to pay for preserving what makes this country great. Yes on Prop 21.

Prop 22 Cuts can be a good thing sometimes. But these cuts would be at the expense of health care and other vital services but also, most importantly, education. I'm not okay with that. No on Prop 22.

Prop 23 Like Prop 19, you've probably heard about this one too. Prop 23 is being funded by two Texas oil companies - Valero and Tesoro - so you know it's mad sheisty. Prop 23 seeks to destroy California's long-standing record of environmental protection, essentially repealing the state's laws on global warming. A big no on Prop 23.

Prop 24 Prop 24 seeks to close corporate tax loopholes. Good. Yes on Prop 24.

Prop 25 As it stands right now here in California, lawmakers need to reach a 2/3rds agreement in order to pass the state budget on time. Legislators haven't met the deadline in 23 years because of this rule which allows partisans (read: Republicans) to block any movement. Forty-seven states have a majority vote. California should too. Definitely a yes on Prop 25.

Prop 26 Don't get Props 25 and 26 confused! Prop 26 seeks to impose a 2/3rds-required vote in order for the legislature to seek paid dues from companies who pollute in our state. It's basically impossible to reach a 2/3rds consensus on anything in this country - and the corporations who are backing this measure know that all too well. A strong no on Prop 26!

Prop 27 This proposition would eliminate the commission that was formed in light of Prop 11 passing in 2008. I'm inclined to vote in favor of this proposition because it seems like the prudent thing to do. Yes on Prop 27 - but not nearly as crucial as the other eight propositions.

Recap:

Yes on Prop 19 • No on Prop 20 • Yes on Prop 21 • No on Prop 22 • No on Prop 23
Yes on Prop 24 • Yes on Prop 25 • No on prop 26 • Yes on Prop 27

Is Barack Obama More Conservative Than Ronald Reagan?

"Obama Reagan" by Fruelund

Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks just dropped his latest write-up on Huffington Post, titled "Who is More Conservative: Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama?" He makes a compelling case, citing Reagan's amnesty deal, terrorist negotiations, and raised taxes - all contrasted with Obama's troop level escalation, hands-off approach to corporations, and lowered taxes. Kinda makes ya think, don't it? (I realize the hypocrisy in that sentence, don't worry.) The observation that Cenk makes in his conclusion is spot-on: the political climate has significantly shifted to the right over the years.

Despite the fact that we've got a Black president, we've still got an overwhelmingly conservative Supreme Court. We've got new laws that let people bring guns to public parks, bars, and now churches. In Arizona, you can be detained by the police for mere suspicion of being illegal, whatever that means. The military industrial complex runs shit. The prison industrial complex runs shit (hold your head, Lindsay). A few years ago, New Orleans was underwater. Pretty soon it'll be underoil (just coined that - patent pending). Even England's new conservative Prime Minister has the balls to point a stern finger at BP for the oil spill. Politicians in Washington? Hardly a peep. Basically we're fucked.

Health Care Bill a Victory for Barack Obama, Democrats and the Nation

While it’s not the bill I would have preferred – the public option woulda been good (talks are still on the table for an upcoming vote), and single payer woulda been great – I must say that I’m proud to see the Democratic party standing firm in their fight for any sort of health care and health insurance reform. It really was a historic day in our nation’s history. For several decades, presidents have fought for this… and now, it’s here. As I chided on Twitter, Barack Obama’s slogan for his 2012 reelection campaign should read as follows: “Hi, I’m Barack Obama and I get. Shit. Done!”

Many of the president’s critics have blamed him for not being strong enough to get his proposed goals accomplished. I have been one of those critics. And tonight, I’ve had to eat some of those words. Did it take Obama too long to pass health care reform? The past year says “yes”; history says “no.” He’s only managed to do what no other president has ever done, and for that, he deserves some props. Nancy Pelosi deserves her due credit as well. Republican congressmen better be thanking their lucky stars that they’ve already got health insurance, because their asses are gonna be hurting in the morning. :D

On the other side of the globe, France’s Socialist Party gave President Nicolas Sarkozy and the conservatives quite a beating in the polls, a potential sneak peek at what’s to come in the country’s 2012 presidential elections in which Sarkozy will be seeking reelection. It seems like Bernard-Henri Lévy got it wrong after all. :D

Protect the Plant!

It’s HempCon week here in Los Angeles, and though I’m not a smot poker, I’m all in favor of the legalization of Mary Jane. Simple and plain, I don’t believe that a plant should be made illegal – the concept just seems ridiculous to me. That’s why I’m distressed over some shit that’s been going down in Los Angeles for some time now: marijuana dispensaries/cannabis clubs are getting shut down and raided left and right thanks to City Attorney Carmen Trutanich (pssst… I voted for the other guy).

The Road to Recovery

I just received a mass e-mail from David Plouffe, the organizing genius behind the Obama 2008 campaign. The e-mail includes the above chart, contrasting job loss rates between the Bush and Obama administrations. The Obama supporter in me wants to say: “Haha! See that? Buck Fush. Obama’s come to save the day.” But my inner skeptic sings a different tune. The chart does an effective job in mirroring Bush from Obama (or vice versa), with the message being: A) Bush = bad; Obama = good, B) Bush = down; Obama = up. Right? But that’s kind of misleading. Could it not be that the exorbitant job loss rates at the end of 2008 until the beginning of 2009 were simply the absolute zenith? Would we imagine job loss to have ever been over 1,000,000 per month? Unlikely (but what do I know). Bottom line: While this chart is reassuring in presenting dwindling job loss rates, it’s safe to be skeptical until job loss is reversed (i.e. when we’re talking about job growth, not job loss). Just my two cents.

Casual Musings on Sarah Palin’s “Notes”

Over the weekend, the Tea Party held a convention with guest speaker Sarah Palin. We all know about Palin’s “hand notes”, but before I get into that lemme just remind you: the Tea Baggers held their summit at the Gaylord Opryland. I’m not saying anything. I’m just saying. Moving along…

Massachusetts 4 Coakley

If you're a Massachusetts progressive, please do what you've got to do this coming Tuesday: make sure that the late Ted Kennedy's senate seat isn't filled and replaced by a Republican. The fate of this senate seat will directly affect the Obama administration's legislative ambitions. Coakley 4 Senate is a vote to uphold Massachusetts as a progressive stronghold.

Hints of Assassination in Jay-Z’s Music Video?

Whether Jay-Z is a Mason or affiliated with the Illuminati is all speculative. It’s fun to talk about, I suppose, but it seems like a waste of time. For years now, imaginative people have pieced together lyrics and video imagery to conjure up theories about Jay-Z’s alleged occult activity. Some of it is fascinating. Often times, it’s ignorant as hell. For instance, a few years ago a preacher played a Jay-Z song for his parish. What he failed to mention was that it was actually a remix done by DJ Danger Mouse for The Grey Album. Clearly DM did it to stoke some false controversy; clearly he succeeded:

Others point to the diamond-shaped Roc hand sign as a symbolic representation of the Eye of Providence seen on dollar bills and in Masonic iconography. Like I said, it’s all speculative. It makes for fun conversation, but it’s nothing more than that. What interested me most about Jay-Z’s new “On to the Next One” video is a brief moment at the 3:39 mark. As Jay is reciting the line “Obama on the text”, a picture of a necklace depicting Jesus on the cross is displayed between a pair of bullets. What’s the purpose of this imagery? More specifically, why is it presented precisely after the Obama reference? Does Jay believe the president will be assassinated/martyred like Jesus?

To be sure, Jay-Z’s lyrics have always been deeper than meets the eye. An innocent verse to some can be perceived as a threat-filled subliminal assault to others. When do we know which is which? I might be reaching here, but who’s to say that “text” isn’t a double-entendre for “Tex”, short for “Texas”, an allusion to the murder scene of John F. Kennedy, the last U.S. president to be assassinated. We’ll probably never receive any explanation(s) for these inquiries because Jay-Z is such a tease. That being said, we can all expect these kinds of questions to not only linger but grow as well – as long as the answers continue to be withheld.
