Daily Operation 10.7.2021

Daily Operation.
Remember this feature of the site? Back at it. Gonna try to stay consistent with this and, yes, post on Hip Hop Is Read... EVERY. DAY.

Comment Section.
You may have noticed the comment section on new posts has disappeared. I've removed this feature of the site for a couple of reasons: 1. It's difficult for me to moderate comments. This site has been up since 2007(!) and I forever receive lots of spammy comments on posts, new and old. It's a headache I wanna rid myself of entirely. 2. With that said, I'd like to move any/all discussion over to Mixcloud. At least we'll see how that goes... Mixcloud has been good to me over the years, allowing me to share music without having to worry about DMCA takedowns, spam, deletions, re-ups, other bs. What I have in mind is for conversations to move over to Mixcloud. Wanna leave a message? Do it on my latest Mixcloud uploads. (The site also allows you to message me directly.) So feel free to say hi over @ The Tape Deck #478...

Quentin Tarantino Kicks Facts on Wax

A note about the condition of the older recordings I am using on this soundtrack – a lot of these came from my personal vinyl collection. Instead of having the record companies give me new digitally cleaned up versions of these recordings from the 60’s and 70’s. I wanted to use the vinyl I’ve been listening to for years – complete with all the pops and cracks. I even kept the sound of the needle being put down on the record. Basically because I wanted people’s experience to be the same as mine when they hear the soundtrack for the first time.

TV Segment/Documentary About Sampling (1988)

Great documentary about sampling made by an Aussie T.V station back in 1988 before the laws we're changed to regulate the practice.

Django Unchained at the New Beverly Cinema

Like Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan and many other American Jews, today I practiced the beloved holiday tradition of eating some delicious Chinese food. (Oh, and the Lakers won! How 'bout that!?) Then I saw Django Unchained. Loved it. Spike Lee, c'mon, man... Anyways, I was fortunate enough to catch the film at the New Beverly Cinema, my favorite movie theater. The New Beverly Cinema is arguably the best revival house theater in all of Los Angeles, showing films in 35mm. It was great to finally catch a Tarantino flick over there, particularly because the famed director purchased the theater just a few years back in order to keep it from going out of business. (Props to Q for that. L.A. needs these landmarks to stay up and running.) Like I said before, I loved the film. Highly recommend it. One of the many reasons I love the New Beverly Cinema: they show great, campy old trailers preceding the feature films - perfect for a spaghetti western-inspired film like Django Unchained! Prior to the feature presentation, they showed a series of topical grindhouse trailers. Hilarity ensued. I kept a mental note of the trailers and thought I'd share them with you:

A Walk Thru the Valley... or Chinatown?

Every time I'd listen to Masta Ace Incorporated's SlaughtaHouse album (a.k.a. "The Yellow Tape"), the intro track would always remind me of a sound I'd heard before. Problem was, I could never quite put my finger on it. Then one day Roman Polanski's 1974 film Chinatown came to mind: specifically, the noirishly sultry orchestral score provided by the masterful Jerry Goldsmith. I'm still not 100% sure I've found a perfect match here, but maybe I'm one step further in the right direction. Listen to the Goldsmith track above (pay attention to the first few seconds) and then do the same with the track below. What do you think?
