Doug E. Fresh & MC Shan on The Wake Up Show

I said it before and I'll say it again. Sway, Tech & Rev are the only reason why I still own a radio. Word to LL.
All that aside, tonight's episode was EPIC.

MC Shan!!!! Doug E. Fresh!!!!

Unreal, right? Lucky for you, I caught it all. As usual, the show was two hours long, so I trimmed out the music (except for the special, exclusive freestyle moments, of course). I also blended the various splits, as opposed to having a handful of 5-10 minute clips. Instead, we've got 40+ minutes of straight-up Hip-Hop knowledge.

Doug E. Fresh & MC Shan on The Wake Up Show

[zshare.net] [DivShare] [Rapidshare]

...

Quotables (in chronological order):

"[Grandmaster Caz & Melle Mel]...two of the greatest emcees of all time...hands down...most styles [in Hip-Hop] come out of Caz, Melle Mel or Moe Dee...the roots..."
- Doug E. Fresh

"...I'm telling you. Juice Crew was my crew, alright? And they was scared of [KRS-One]. I'ma tell it right now. Why you think it was Shan against BDP? And I had the Juice Crew. Aight? Y'understand? (Wowww!!!) It was one man, me, against a whole borough..."
- MC Shan

[On battling]: "Battle was so personal... It wasn't really about skills... It was about 'personally, I'm gonna disrespect you. I'ma look in your history. I'ma try to find who you really are and go in'...That was the birth of the new style of battle, and people don't know that."
- Doug E. Fresh

"Tech asked 'Where did the term 'Hip-Hop' come from?' The term, to me, from the way that I remember, it's a spin-off of what bebop was. Jazz was the bepop. Based on Herc and everybody up in the Bronx...The kind of Hip-Hop, going back and forth...That started in the Bronx. The whole crowd participation and interaction, that started in Harlem. But alot of people don't understand that Hip-Hop started through the Hispanics and the Blacks. Together. Y'know what I mean? You can't separate the two. They started it together. They grew up together. They was in the projects playing together. It was the battles, it was the dance, it was the graffitti and the whole interaction... Hip-Hop became a term that cats jumped on... From the way we always spoke about it, it was a spin-off of what bebop was about. And then we created Hip-Hop... That's how we came up with it... Hip-Hop is a lifestyle. It was what we do. Who we are."
- Doug E. Fresh

"Here's what happened: Eric B. found Rakim... That [style] was new... Marley, you didn't know everything brotha, 'cuz Eric B. & Rakim came off... Marley didn't wanna do it... Marley's like 'I'm not doing that'..."
- MC Shan on producing 'Check Out My Melody' and 'Eric B. Is President'

Question posed: "What if G Rap and Kane got into it?"

"G Rap was really the first original gangsta rapper until L.A. tried to call it...I'll bet even if you ask N.W.A...." (ouch!)
- MC Shan

....okay, I'll stop spoiling it for you. Just go ahead and listen to the interview!

Real Time with Michael Eric Dyson

I'd like to send a big 'THANK YOU' to Dr. Michael Eric Dyson for not only standing up for REAL Hip-Hop, but being critical of its "nasty side."
F*ck Forget Congress! In order to change Hip-Hop, we as a people need to do it from the inside. That's why we not only need to support artists like Common, Mos Def & Immortal Technique, as Dr. Dyson mentioned, but Dyson himself, as he is equally a part of the progressive Hip-Hop community.

His book is in stores.

Hip-Hop Insomniacs Club with Tupac Shakur & Ice Cube

'Trapped' by 2pac/Tupac Shakur [Lyrics]

"One day I'm gonna bust/ Blow up on this society/
Why did ya lie to me? I couldn't find a trace of equality/"

The initial reason for posting this clip was to showcase one of 'Pac's (being that September is officially 'Pac Month' around here...lol) finest videos/songs ever, depicting police brutality, racial profiling and all that goes with it. But in case you haven't heard, a new debate taking place in the Senate concerning lethal injections has hit the political and philosophical scene. Without getting into my own personal opinions on capital punishment, the recent talks have been sparked by the argument that lethal injections, thought by many to be the most "humane" way of killing a person, is in fact a slow and excruciatingly painful death.
Lethal injection is currently implemented in 38 states.

For more information, check out this recent BBC article on the topic.

If you'd like to sign a petition (pointless? perhaps... but IMO still worth the 25 seconds it takes to put your name down) to ban lethal injection and pancuronium bromide, head on over here; you know what to do.

Now enjoy part 2 of tonight's this morning's Insomniacs post:

Save Darfur: First Words, Now Action

Over the last month, more than 100,000 Save Darfur activists have called on President Bush to live up to his promise to lead on Darfur when he addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this week. He heard your calls.

Yesterday, President Bush told the UNGA, "The United Nations must answer this challenge to conscience -and live up to its promise to promptly deploy peacekeeping forces to Darfur."

These are strong words. Now the president must follow through with equally strong actions to secure peace in Darfur.

Ask President Bush to lead the world in supporting the peacekeepers and ensuring that peace talks are successful. Click here now to send your message.

After years of frustrating delays, we may finally be at a crucial turning point for the people of Darfur. The U.N. has authorized a joint U.N.-A.U. peacekeeping mission, and renewed peace talks are scheduled for October. But the success of the peacekeepers and the peace talks hinges on the commitments of President Bush and other world leaders.

The United States must contribute its share of equipment and funding to support the peacekeeping mission and urge fellow world leaders to ensure that the peace talks are inclusive and effective.

The lives of millions hang in the balance -- President Bush must follow his strong words at the UNGA with strong actions. Click here now to tell him to uphold his commitment to securing peace in Darfur and to urge his fellow world leaders to do the same.

Then please ask your friends and family to join you in seizing this moment to help the people of Darfur.
Best regards,

Colleen Connors

Buy a cheap laptop, give one to world's poor

An important bit of information I think you all might like to know about:

* Bobbie Johnson, technology correspondent
* The Guardian
* Tuesday September 25 2007

A computer intended to improve education for children in developing countries is to be offered to western buyers.

Engineers at the One Laptop Per Child project, based in the US, have built a low-cost computer designed to work in some of the world's most undeveloped areas. Until now only governments have been invited to buy the machines, but in an attempt to jump-start the project, western consumers will soon be able to buy their own version.

In return for spending $399 (£197), customers will receive their own laptop as well as paying for a second computer for children in deprived parts of world. To begin with, the machines will be donated to youngsters in countries such as Afghanistan, Haiti and Rwanda.

The machine, conceived by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, incorporates a number of innovations, including a high-resolution screen and low power consumption. It can be powered by solar energy, foot pump or a clockwork charger.

The idea is that access to learning aids and hi-tech equipment will help children in some of the world's poorest countries learn skills that can lift them out of poverty. The scheme will run for two weeks in November, and only in North America

P.S. Sorry I been away for a while.

Scary title, right? Please check out this recent, unedited, unbiased, REAL video clip of Bush speaking, and tell me what you think:

Part of the reason why there is not this instant democracy in Iraq is because people are still recovering from Saddam Hussein’s brutal rule. I thought an interesting comment was made when somebody said to me, I heard somebody say, where’s Mandela? Well, Mandela is dead, because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas. He was a brutal tyrant that divided people up and split families...

Adam Kokesh Keeps It Real

This man is a TRUE patriot...

My name is Adam Kokesh and I am a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

Today I wave the American flag with great pride. I wave it upside-down because I love my country, but it is in a state of distress. It is for my love of country that I am here today. I am here to return our democracy to its potential greatness.

I am against this war because it is bad for America. It is bad for our security. It is bad for our national defense. It is bad for our ability to fight terrorism. It is bad for our stature abroad. It is bad for our military. And it is bad for our brothers and sisters who continue to lose their lives every day in a futile occupation.

We recently heard the testimony of General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker. Unfortunately, General Petraeus was acting in his roll as a political appointee and not as a soldier. We heard the same spin from the President. The suggested draw-down is actually a forced withdrawal. When the five brigades of the surge come home, we will have no replacements available to replace them. They have attempted to spin this by saying that they could request more troops. They may be right. They could further destroy our military by doing so, but I pray they don’t.

As we all know now, we were lied into this war and it is lies that are keeping us there. They lied about Weapons of Mass Destruction, they lied about Jessica Lynch, they lied about Pat Tillman, and they lied about Al Qaeda and Saddam. And those are just the lies we know about!

But I’m not so mad that I was lied to, as I am that I cannot trust my government any more. It astounds me that yet so many Americans want more than anything to trust our government. When will we wake up, and realize that the power of the truth is greater than any force brought to bear by any Army ever fielded?

But there are some lies that are being told to our children every day in order to convince them to sign up to be sent into the Baghdad meat grinder. Proponents of the policy in Iraq are quick to point out that everyone in the military volunteered, but what does that mean if most of them were tricked into enlisting by the lies that recruiters tell every day? It means that to support the troops means to cut through the lies, bring them home, and stop this criminal occupation!

Since joining the military came to mean fighting for a lie, they have become so desperate, that the age and weight standards have been raised; there are a record number of “morality waivers” for convicted felons; it is now easy to get in without a high school diploma; even convicted rapists are allowed to enlist. With the standards lowered at the highest levels of decision-making, we can only imagine what recruiters are resorting to when they have trouble meeting their monthly quotas.

We have come to a point in history when our government’s intents are so far from the will of the people that we have to rise up! WHEN INJUSTICE BECOMES LAW, RESISTANCE BECOMES DUTY!

How do you resist liars? Speak the truth. How do you stop a war based on lies? It starts with the truth! When we take away these lies, we can force our government to choose between no military or one based on truth, that truly represents the will of the people. Iraq Veterans Against the War are kicking off our Truth In Recruiting Campaign with National Truth In Recruiting Day on Monday and asking concerned citizens to share our truth with those affected by our government’s lies the most. If you will be in the DC area on Monday, be in front of Union Station between 7am and 1pm for instructions and materials.

In the immortal words of Dave Cline, a dedicated warrior for peace and justice who passed away yesterday suffering from the effects of Agent Orange and three bullet wounds suffered in Vietnam: There is something you should know before you go. They wave the flag when you attack, when you come home they turn their backs.”

Iraq Veterans Against the War has put the truth in your hands. In the words of Mark Twain, “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” Start walking America, because it is our lies that are now ravaging a sovereign nation on the other side of the world.

Today, we are marching to deliver a message to Congress. We will be dying-in to portray for them the cost of this war in human lives, and to send a clear message that we the people are rising up. This action is in solidarity with the people marching today in Baghdad who peacefully oppose the occupation of their country. Unfortunately, for those who have witnessed the occupation first hand, the deaths we will be portraying are all too real. The message reads:

Dear Congress,

We have come before you today with a simple message: as a representation of the people you have failed us and you have blood on your hands. This is blood that the American people will not allow to continue to be spilled in our name any longer. Today we are marching in solidarity with the Iraqi people who want the occupation to end. It is fully within your power to stop this tragedy.

You have just heard the testimony of General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker. General Casey was replaced by General Petraeus because he would not support the President’s agenda of keeping as many troops deployed as long as possible, keeping our military teetering at the breaking point. General Petraeus was selected for this position not only because of his abilities as a soldier, but also for political purposes. When he testified before you he was acting in his role as a political appointee. He told you the surge was working. This is the same absurd optimism that we have been hearing since the beginning of this occupation from its proponents: the insurgency is in its last throes; we are turning the corner. Why do you still believe these people?

We have come before you to ask that you consider the cost in human life of this conflict so far. We are also here to tell you that we will not stand for this corruption of our democracy any longer. We the people are in the streets. We the people are fed up. We the people are ready to rise up and take back our democracy.

Signed,

The Empowered Patriots

Today marks a turning point for our movement. Today we make the shift from protesting to direct action. Today we begin to restore the rightful order in our democracy. Today is the day the people stop fearing the government, and the government starts fearing the people!

Today may very well mark the beginning of the American anti-fascism revolution. March with us. Honor the dead with us. If you are willing to risk arrest, lie in the street, if not, lie in the grass. Die-in when you hear the air raid sirens. Raise your voice and your fist with us in defiance to send a message to our leadership. If you will not make peace for us, we will make it for ourselves! Power to the people!

Hip-Hop Insomniacs Club with The Geto Boys

Aight, new idea...lemme know if you guys are down with this one...

Classic hip-hop videos! Every night! (I'll try)
A fusion of Yo! MTV Raps (in the sense of presenting GOOD hip-hop videos) mixed with a popular feature from Crooks & Liars (a blog I frequent...frequently).

Lemme know if you guys dig the idea, want the name changed, whatever.

Since it's currently being called 'Hip-Hop Insomniacs Club', I figured I'd post the classic 'Mind Playing Tricks On Me' [Lyrics] by Houston's own Geto Boys (for all the obvious reasons).

President of the Hip-Hop Caucus Attacked by Police & Arrested

Thanks to Crooks & Liars for informing me of this latest in a perilously infinite string of tragedies...

WASHINGTON - September 10 - Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr., president of the Hip Hop Caucus, was attacked by six capitol police today, when he was stopped from entering the Cannon Caucus Room on Capitol Hill, where General Petreaus gave testimony today to a joint hearing for the House Arms Services Committee and Foreign Relations Committee on the war in Iraq.

After waiting in line throughout the morning for the hearing that was scheduled to start at 12:30pm, Rev. Yearwood was stopped from entering the room, while others behind him were allowed to enter. He told the officers blocking his ability to enter the room, that he was waiting in line with everyone else and had the right to enter as well. When they threatened him with arrest he responded with "I will not be arrested today." According to witnesses, six capitol police, without warning, "football tackled" him. He was carried off in a wheel chair by DC Fire and Emergency to George Washington Hospital.

Rev. Yearwood said as he was being released from the hospital to be taken to central booking, "The officers decided I was not going to get in Gen. Petreaus' hearing when they saw my button, which says 'I LOVE THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ.'"

Capitol Police are not saying what the charges are, but an inside source has said that the charge is assaulting a police officer. Rev. Yearwood is scheduled to be transferred to Central Processing to be arraigned tomorrow morning.

The incident was recorded by an observer and is available on YouTube WhyNotNews http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiradcejA6o

Ron Paul on the Bill O'Liely Factor (9/10/07)

I'm used to Bill attacking and speaking on top of left-wingers, but to see him attack one of his own... Wow...

Watch how Bill brushes off every good point Ron Paul makes attempts to make.

Shouts to DJ Raida again!
...maybe we'll start a Kanye Graduation S&E-a-thon. I recently stumbled upon an Elton John sample from Graduation that will probably be next up in our S&E posts. Until then, enjoy this one. Like Raida, Gone is one of my favorite songs from Late Registration. The sampling is really on point and it's just a great listen. Once again, enjoy this latest installment of S&E:

Conventional Wisdom (Aug. 27th - Sept. 2nd)

Quotes of the week:

"Ask Prem' n***a, Fiddy don't back down"
- 50 Cent ...

"Fiddy told me go 'head switch the style up, and if they hate, then let them hate and watch the money pile up."
- Kanye (quoting 50? Brilliant! Now THAT'S what I call big pimpin')

Kanye:
...for all in all making a better album than Fiddy, albeit his worst to date (it's all according to my opinion folks...feel free to hurl your critiques at me.)

Nas:
...If you know the tune, sing along: na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na, Bill O'Reilly, is a douchebag. (and a "chump"!)

R. Kelly & Busta Rhymes:
...Trials delayed...Go figure...

Rolling Stone Magazine & The "Rivalry":
...By now I'm used to mainstream artists getting an infinitely greater amount of shine than others. No sh*t right? But by hyping up this "rivalry" that's really all about super-capitalism (EVIL!!!), it's only building a bigger ditch for commercial hip-hop (hmm...wait..maybe that's a good thing?). All in all, it represents hip-hop's "dark side" if you ask me...

Steve Jobs:
...On the plus side, he's releasing a new iPod tommorrow (and the day after that...). On the down side, it makes what you have utterly, COMPLETELY OBSOLETE. lol

Talib Kweli:
...For hitting the #2 spot on the charts... Hey! This is a big deal! It's the first time he's been in the top 10. Kudos to Kwe'. (BUY THE ALBUM!!!)

Today in Hip-Hop: September 9th

"I'm the cocky breed/ I'm dope like poppy seed/" - Jay-Z

On this day in 1941, soul legend Otis Redding was born in Georgia. His contributions to soul music are epic, but he also still retains a meaningful hip-hop presence. He's been sampled by and for artists such as (EDIT: How could I forget? Kanye also sampled Otis for his Late Registration track 'Gone' featuring Cam'ron...Thanks DJ Raida! A S&E post is in order...soon...) Nas ('Affirmative Action'), Ghostface ('Fish'), Originoo Gunn Clappaz ('Gunn Clapp'), Big Daddy Kane ('Nuff Respect'), De La Soul, Al Tariq, MC Shan (soon to be mentioned...), Public Enemy, Das EFX, Marley Marl, EPMD ('The Steve Martin'), Grand Puba, Geto Boys and many more... Redding and his band passed away in a '67 plane crash. He was only 26 years old. R.I.P.

On this day in 1965, Shawn Moltke was born. Scratching your head? That's MC Shan, Queens' representative voice (along with the Juice Crew) during the hip-hop Bridge Wars.

On this day in 1967, the James Brown song 'Cold Sweat' rose to the top of the R&B charts, maintaining its position for three weeks. The song was later sampled for some classic songs: 'Welcome to the Terrordome' & 'How to Kill a Radio Consultant' by Public Enemy, 'Jackin for Beats' by Ice Cube and 'What's the Word?' by Chubb Rock. Other artists to sample the song are DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, UTFO, Terminator X, King T and several others. R.I.P. The Godfather of Soul.

On this day in 1972, 'Back Stabbers' by The O'Jays hit the top of the R&B charts. The track was later flipped on different songs by Grand Puba, Together Brothers, Detroit's Most Wanted and Junior MAFIA, all of whom retained the title of the original song, or at least a variant ('Back Stabbers', 'Backstabber', 'Back Stabber'...). The song was also sampled by WC & the Maad Circle, Babu and Angie Stone. R.I.P. William Powell and Eddie Lavert's son Gerald.

On this day in 1977, rapper Soulja Slim (b. James Tapp, Jr.) of No Limit fame was born in N'awlins, Louisiana. Slim was tragically gunned down in 2003 on his way to a concert. R.I.P.

On this day in 1985, Chicago rapper Young Berg a.k.a. Ice Berg was born. His album comes out next month.

On this day in 1995, the jaw-dropping hit 'Gangsta's Paradise' by Coolio (feat. L.V.) from the Dangerous Minds soundtrack hit the top of the Billboard charts. The song earned Coolio the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance.

On this day in 1996, President Bill Clinton presented Rosa Parks with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor given by the U.S. executive branch.

Also on this day in 1996, R&B group BLACKstreet released their second album, 'Another Level.' It featured the smash hit 'No Diggity' featuring the one and only Dr. Dre.

On this day in 1999, Aerosmith reunited with Run-D.M.C. to perform the classic rap/rock collaboration 'Walk This Way' at the MTV Video Music Awards. R.I.P. Jam Master Jay.

On this day in 2001, shamed (by dog owners at least) footballer Michael Vick made his NFL debut in San Francisco.

On this day in 2003, OutKast pals Andre 3000 and Big Boi divided and conquered the industry by simultaneously releasing their own individual singles: 'Hey Ya!' and 'The Way You Move.' The two singles carried the album (Speakerboxxx/The Love Below) to achieve diamond status, going 11 times platinum. The album won the Album of the Year award at the 2004 Grammys.

Also on this day in 2003, Beyonce released her single 'Baby Boy' featuring Sean Paul. The song soon hit the top of the R&B singles charts, staying up there for 5 straight weeks. Interestingly enough, the track usurped Pharrell and boyfriend Jay-Z's collab 'Frontin'. Even more interesting: the track on the charts before 'Frontin' was 'Crazy in Love' by Bey' and Jay. I guess it's safe to say that Jay-once owned the summer of '03.

On this day in 2005, U2 performed their epic 'One' with the R&B songstress Mary J. Blige at Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast. R.I.P. To those we lost...

On this day in 2007, YOU HAD A GREAT DAY!
