Eric B. & Rakim: B-Sides, Rarities & Remixes (Vol. 3)

B-Sides? Yes. Rarities? Yes. Remixes? Kinda. Volume Three is the first and only instrumental release in our Eric B. & Rakim series, featuring some great beats from classic tracks like "Juice (Know the Ledge)" and "Don't Sweat the Technique". But what we've mostly got here are instrumental versions of remixed tracks. For instance, we've got three "Casualties of Wars" beats from various remixes. All different, all worth checking out. To put the cherry on this cake, I've added the acapella to "I Know You Got Soul" -- which just so happens to be my favorite Eric B. & Rakim cut -- to close the set out. Hope you enjoy it and as always, turn it up!! (Vol. 4 and 5 are already in the pipeline...)

They Reminisce Over You... Ivan van Sertima

Ivan van Sertima
(January 26th, 1935 ~ May 25th, 2009)

I'm not gonna lie. I first heard of Dr. Ivan van Sertima from Nas' latest record, prompting me to quickly Google his name and read about his research, literary accomplishments and overall intellectual prowess. What a mind. And what a life. Rest in power!
I used to worship a certain Queens police murderer/
'Til I read the words of Ivan van Sertima/
He inserted something in me that made me feel worthier/
Now I spit revolution, I'm his hood interpreter/

New iPhone/iPod Touch Application from Scion!

I know at least a few visitors of the site that'll be thrilled by this news. Scion -- the company that brings you those slick cars and great, free music events -- has announced a brand new app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The Radio 17 Beats Per Minute (BPM) Meter, as they call it, allows you to easily find out the BPM of a track you're listening to just by tapping on the screen. To get the app, just follow the instructions on the intentionally-campy tutorial video below, featuring Blu Jemz.

Not sure if they've got this plan in the works or not, but tell me if this is a good idea: creating some sort of network or database in which music listeners can not only retrieve BPMs by tapping on their iPhones/iPods, but send them in to create a BPM library. Knah'mean? Anyways, for info on this app and other Scion news, check out: Scion.com/

A-Alikes - Explode [Music Video + Release Info]

If you don't know much about A-Alikes, I can tell you this much: They're a lot like dead prez, but I've always thought of their style as injected with a little bit of (old) Mobb Deep's grittiness. Anyways, A-Alikes have got a new documentary/soundtrack project out titled The Ballot or the Bullet. The documentary will have a featured film screening in the Bronx, NY on June 1st by Rebel Diaz. They've also got a mixtape on the way, so be on the lookout for that as well:
A-Alikes is also set to release a new mixtape with DJ Victorious on June 14th titled The Hustle and the Hunted Part 3. While many of the new mixtapes out now have an array of features, A-Alikes keep it classic with artists relevant to their music. I.G. is featured along with production by Hedrush, Checkmate, UK producer Baby J, and DJ Butta who also produced “Explode.”

Michael Eric Dyson Critiques Barack Obama

Hip hop journalist extraordinaire Davey D chopped it up with Dr. Dyson to discuss Barack Obama and his first few months in office. What has the good doctor got to say? Well, he gives Barry an "A for effort" on international efforts, but he lets loose on issues of domestic policy, particularly as it relates to the Black community. Just like Dr. Dyson expresses in this video, and just like I've made clear since before he even won, it is possible to both support the man, as well as to critique his words and actions. Honesty is the key.

Download: Amor Jones - Epic Failure

I'd be lying if I said HHIR has had the game on lock for past couple months. Admittedly, I've been lazy as fuck since I finished with school which is ironic because technically I've got more time on my hands now. Such is life. One of the cats I feel that I've neglected as far repping his music is the homie Amor Jones who just unleashed this new tape right here, titled Epic Failure. Can ya dig it?

As a fellow Los Angeleno and friend of the site, it's my duty to share this one witcha. Co-signed by Mr. A.W.O.L. himself, Hurricane I. Peep the description via Jones plus the download link below:
The tape that world’s been waiting on (you know rappers gotta exagerate things), Epic Failure. After months of it being pushed back, countless revisions, and even a cover change, it is here lol. I’m hella excited to release this man. I feel like a parent watching it’s child go off to college, you just gotta pray the best lmao. I put all my time/energy/verbal abilities into making this tape something timeless. This is my introduction to hip hop in a sense. I just want people to see that Amor Jones has something to say & that I’m gon say it LOUD lol.

Kanye West Embraces Illiteracy

Here we are once again. Kanye’s bitchassness never ceases to amaze me! Five years ago, I thought he’d bring some sense and sensibility to the rap game. What could be further from the truth?

The latest news out of the Kanye Universe is that he’s “not a reader”. Check out this gem from a recent interview: “Sometimes people write novels and they just be so wordy and so self-absorbed”. Wow. So you don’t read, because the authors tend to be “self-absorbed”? This coming from possibly the most self-absorbed person this side of Narcissus, of Greek mythology?

But what have we here? Kanye has a new book out titled “Thank You and You're Welcome”. He doesn’t read, but he wants you to buy his book (i.e. give him your money)! Mind-blowing. This voluminous, literary masterpiece stands at a whopping 52-pages long, and features some pages which are completely blank (I shit you not). Other pages have just a few words scribbled on them. Some might call this a revolutionary leap towards the far reaches of minimalist couture. I say that stuff’s just clownin’ dog, c’mon, how messed up is you? (C) Eminem

We haven’t seen such an embrace of idiocy since the Bush Administration which, admittedly, already feels like ancient history to me. Kanye goes full-frontal with his arrogant ignorance: “I am a proud non-reader of books.” Way to represent for the kids, ‘Ye.

Take it from Dr. King: “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

They Reminisce Over You... Dolla

Rapper Dolla (b. Roderick Anthony Burton II) was shot and killed today at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles. I was just there. This is the third time I've been near a rapper's death (The Notorious B.I.G., Pimp C... and now this). The fucked up part about this is that Dolla was younger than me! It's a crying shame. Mad love goes out to his friends and family. Stay strong.

To live and die in L.A....
