Back to Black, One Last Time

The untimely death of Amy Winehouse hit me in the chest with the same impact as Michael Jackson's passing. There's a great sense of guilt I feel as a member of the culture at large - a culture that mocks people who are in the mental and physical pits of hell, battling addictions and past (and ongoing) traumas; a culture that revels in the degradation of human beings as long as it's televised for our leisure. I hate lecture-giving, holier than thou people like the next person, but I can't help but feel this way. When Amy released her single "Rehab", we took it as nothing more than lighthearted fun. I can't listen to that particular song ever again without feeling a sense of even the slightest bit of shame. Late night talk shows lambasted Amy - and Michael for that matter - and I, like you, took part in the fun. It makes my stomach churn, in retrospect. The saddest part, of course, is that the game doesn't stop and history will continue to repeat itself. Lindsay Lohan is only two years away from reaching the age of twenty-seven and joining that ominous 27 Club. Will she get her act together or meet the same fate as Amy? Can "The Little Girl Lost" be rescued and become "The Little Girl Found"? They tried to make Amy go to rehab. They didn't do a good enough job. Who really embraced her? Who really cares...?

At the moment I can't stop listening to Amy's Back to Black LP, with the title track in particular playing on repeat. The chorus alone is a prime display of the absolute rawest of human emotions delivered vocally. In my book, "Back to Black" by itself rivals anything in Diana Ross & The Supremes' catalog - just to name one appropriate example - and that alone is testament to Amy Winehouse's artistry and the grand tragedy of her early departure. To quote Robert De Niro in A Bronx Tale, "the saddest thing in life is wasted talent."

I Call Bullshit on AskMen.com’s Top 99 Most Desirable Women of 2010 List

About a month ago, AskMen.com revealed their – emphasis on “their” – list of the top 99 most desirable women of 2010. The winner was Emmanuelle Chriqui. Now I’m all for seeing a hot Hebrew honey get her props, but the number one spot? Really? That’s when I got to investigating – because really, despite my troubling penchant for procrasturbation procrastinating, an urgent call to task like this demands my full attention. Paying notice to AskMen’s rating system reveals that the ultimate score that each women can earn is calculated by averaging the readers’ score with – get this(!) – the AskMen.com’s staff score. That doesn’t sound very democratic, now, does it? AskMen.com boasts that over 6 million votes were cast in this “election.” But what significance does that hold if the staff can tip the scales in favor of one woman over another? I crunched the numbers and it ain’t pretty.

Burn Hollywood Burn: Racism (or Racialism) in Vanity Fair?

From the offset, lemme just state that I don’t recall ever opening up a copy of Vanity Fair magazine in my entire life. Not in waiting rooms, not ever. Some have noted that Vanity Fair has a whites-only track record. The argument is quite extensive with plenty of evidence to support the claim. Still, I always enjoy playing devil’s advocate (hopefully this post won’t make it seem as if I’m playing white devil’s advocate).

Israel has a (ridiculous) policy of mandatory military service for every non-Arab (ahem) citizen once they turn 18 years old. This rule applies to both men and women. Men are required to serve for three years, while women must serve two. There are, of course, some exceptions. If you have a medical condition, either physical or psychological, you may be exempted from military service. Women who are married are given a pass as well. Additionally, and most controversially, you may defer from military service if you are an Orthodox Jew a “religious person.”

I’ve got some Israeli friends. Some of them are religious, some of them aren’t. The secular Israelis I’ve spoken to on this matter often express a deep resentment towards and against Orthodox Jews for their pussyfooting tendencies. Essentially, religious service dodgers are chickenhawks – hawks to the concept of war, chicken to their own participation in its practice. As a Jew who stands on the outside of this debate, I’ve always sympathized with the secular Israelis’ argument. Why must they bare the brunt of war and civil hostility – dead sons, daughters, brothers, sisters… – while these black hat dweebs snug their noses inside of the Talmud all day long?

Supermodel Bar Refaeli was recently called out by an Israeli army general, accusing her of deferring from the military. Apparently she joined into a sham marriage in order to dodge the service and then divorced the temporarily-lucky sucker soon afterwards. What was my initial reaction when I read this story? Good for her! She did whatever she could to avoid joining the army. I’d do the same if there was a draft in this country (unless it was a war I deemed just, like WWII). I’m not just supporting her decision because she’s a supermodel. Like I said, I would’ve done the same thing. But let’s kick the facts for a second, shall we? Smoking-hot model chick: must join the army. Haredi Jew: exempt. Huh? Why? Scratch the “smoking-hot model” part. Religious Jews get a pass but women don’t (unless they’re married)? That’s some ol’ bullshit. Israel is often called the “only democracy in the Middle East.” How so? Seems like a theocracy if you ask me…

The State of Israel was once conceived by secular Jews – many, if not most of them, were atheists – who envisioned a socialistic Jewish homeland. Then it got hijacked by right-wing fanatics who impose their primitive, religious beliefs on everyone else, conveniently covering their own asses from the problems they’ve created while making the innocent suffer the consequences. Yet another reason why I, a Jew, can never be a Zionist.

On My Radar: Natalie Suliman

I don't follow fashion... at all. So don't worry, I'm not turning Hip Hop Is Read into KanyeUniverseCity (if it wasn't for his girls section, I'd swear he plays with swords... not that there'd be anything wrong with that, of course). Like some most all straight guys who surf the web, I do my fair share of... um... research... on... the ladies (and you wonder why there's no such thing as a "soft" drive...ahem). Last year we saw some fresh faces like Rosa Acosta, Tahiry, Keri Hilson (been an admirer since "Hey Now (Mean Muggin)", Nicki Minaj, Amber Rose and more. Each of them earned a spot on Complex's solid-yet-debatable Hottest Girls of 2009 list. In 2009, though, I and a small but dedicated group of pervy wankers came across a rising new star: Natalie Suliman. It's a bit unfortunate that her name is so similar to the Octomom's, sure, but who cares? She gets the HHIR stamp of approval and I expect big things from her in 2010.
