It's been a big year for DMV musicians yU and Slimkat. Today is the crown on their 2014 - the release of the new album "People of Today." Earlier in the year yU released the much anticipated album "March on Washington" with the group Diamond District. While Slimkat, who has been producing for a slew of great musicians including the likes of Eric Roberson, saved his best for the soundscape of The 1978ers.

A host of musicians add live instrumentation that gives the new album a complete, lush, multi-dimensional feel. Lorenzo Ferguson (Zo!) plays keys on the album stunner "Sacreligious." Meanwhile yU expands his arsenal beyond the microphone, adding Xylophone/Kalimba to many tracks. Ben Jackson's trombone lights up "Without A Clue" and a few other tracks. Vocalists Bilal Salaam, B. Jamelle, and Kima Aldridge add singing throughout. The album's energy is crisp and beautiful, flowing with ease and exuding good vibrations front to back.

Special attention has to be paid to yU's lyrical display throughout. Holding down all 18 tracks, yU offers his usual deft wordplay chock full of philosphical gems that illuminate with observational insight gained from experience - the kind where you sit and watch it unfold before speaking. This is why yU's earned the nickname "The Humble King."

Catch Wreck - Origins Volume 1

Origins is a reflection of over a dozen years of experience in developing the Hip Hop scene in Boston, from the dreams of recording with and opening for notable acts, to the realities of creating in what can often feel like an isolated and unsupportive environment. From a young age, Catch Wreck has not only sought to establish himself in the scene he has helped cultivate in his hometown but also to seek out and learn from those who pioneered this art form.

What does the LP Sound Like?

Catch Wreck is undeniably an artist on the rise with more supporters steadily joining his movement. Featured in XXL’s “15 Boston Rappers You Should Know”, Catch Wreck has released four solo Hip Hop projects independently since 2009, as well as an EP with his rock band Sweatshop.

Catch Wreck says of the Origins LP:

“Its been a long time and I’m ready to share this history with people. At thirteen, I recorded one of my first songs at Chuck D from Public Enemy’s studio in long island with the artist Kyle Jason and I was lucky enough to include that on this project. I hope everyone enjoys this. [...] It is a proper representation of my growth as an artist [and] as I begin to push forward with releasing new material in 2014. Most importantly, I hope that it can motivate and encourage fellow artists to pursue their path and craft, at the same time understanding how much time and effort it takes to move towards success”

Yasiin Gaye - The Departure (Side One)

Amerigo Gazaway’s new *Soul Mates* series continues the theme of his previous work in creating collaborations that never were. On the series’ first installment, the producer unites Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and soul legend Marvin Gaye for a dream collaboration aptly titled “Yasiin Gaye”. Building the album’s foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye’s Motown classics, Gazaway re-orchestrates the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework. Carefully weaving Bey’s dense raps and Gaye’s soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality far closer to Gaye’s famous duets than that of a “mashup” album.

Millennium Jazz Music - Ruff Graft (J Dilla Tribute)

Ruff Graft is an in-house collaborative beat-tape made by some of Millennium Jazz's producers and DJ as they all take time out to pay homage to the late great Mr James Dewitt Yancey aka J Dilla.

The title and artwork of this project is obviously a play on Jay Dee's original Ruff Draft album, but it also represents the fact that Gadget sprung the idea on the group on Feb 10th (Memorial Day) without notice and only days to work around commitments and come up with one or two productions sampling something that Jay had used himself in his own work. Yes, it was a "ruff graft" indeed!

We have a mixed bag of tributes from Stay Classy, SmokedBeat, Gadget, RickMal, Bones The Beat Head and DJ Jonny Jazz.

We hope you enjoy our little collection, and we encourage you to support the Yancey family and their efforts to keep James's legacy alive.

Just imagine if this happened and picture the setting…

It’s the late 1930’s and local jazz club is packed to the brim with people awaiting the rapper Nas and his jazz musicians (orchestrated by Funky DL) along with featured artists to come and play a 10-track set to forever be remembered. The lights are dim and the hall is filled with smoke, whilst the clinking sound of champagne flutes ambiently gesture in the atmosphere. Nas and Funky DL are having their picture taken outside the club in an array of spotlights glaring from their vehicles (see artwork). Then it happens… The two step inside the club and “JAZZMATIC” erupts … All you have to do now is… “press play”...

We’re sure you’ll agree that this is a phenomenal project and ask you to share this with as many hip-hip and good music fans as you can find.
