It’s a rainy day here in L.A., and I’m reminded that it’s a perfect time to play some Raekwon the Chef. Just kidding, I’ve been working on this for months.
This year, August 1st - my birthday - was the 30th anniversary of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx; and we also witnessed the release of Raekwon’s first album in over 8 years, The Emperor's New Clothes, via Ice H20 Records and Mass Appeal Records. While I loved the new album, the runtime on TENC was a bit short for my liking, so I put together the Wu-Tang Killa Bee-Sides edition, featuring some supplementary Wu raps spanning the interval between the Chef’s two most recent albums, 2017-2025.
While diggin’ in those e-crates, I came across dozens of other great tracks featuring the Chef. Enter… Emperial Darts. Now, “Emperial” is not a word. I know this. It's a bit of artistic flourish, word to Tarantino. (But unlike Quentin, I'll explain: it's a nod to the jump from Empire Records to Mass Appeal.) Plus any typo is fine in my opinion for any Raekwon release; I don’t think “Immobilarity” was even a word prior to the 1990s. Tell me I’m wrong…
In 2025, we also got this beautiful cassette re-issue of 2009’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II from Fat Beats. Love what they did here. But I do this too, though! In fact, I’d say I resurrected this tape deck shit, and this the motherf-
