There are a select few rap blogs I read religiously. Unkut is one of them – Robbie holds it down and keeps it one hunnid. But you already know that. Making the rounds on Google Reader, I was humored when I read the site’s latest post, Five Reasons Why Rap Can’t Mourn The Dearly Departed, written by guest contributor Phillip Mlynar. Take a quick look at this portion of his piece:
There are people who genuinely seem to believe that posting up links to YouTube videos somehow correlates with ‘celebrating’ a rapper’s legacy. It doesn’t. And it’s pretty insulting on sonic quality grounds alone. There are people who think it’s respectful to post up back catalogues and archives of ‘rare’ releases that at times seem to break into nothing more than a list of CD singles (you really need the clean version of “Nice Girl, Wrong Place”?)Phillip either has me confused with another blogger/bootlegger who posted clean versions of Gang Starr tracks (who else?) or just refuses to say my name, word to Destiny’s Child. That’s fine. Personally, I don’t mind calling people out. But you already know that. So Wassup?!

Bichasblogguz... Fuck that guy. Do you. Props on the Jay-Z archives...
ReplyDelete^ Word. DJs from every corner of the map were hitting me up to thank me for that post. In fact, I got the idea from a DJ who needed some clean cuts for his show. Glad to know I could participate in something larger than this site. #ripguru #fucksolar
ReplyDeleteman your site is one of the only blogs I actually read... how does he suggest we honor artists other than repping their music? dude needs to STFU
ReplyDeleteGood point. It's funny that he doesn't mention the "proper" way of mourning.
ReplyDelete^I was about to say the same thing. I honestly didn't think someone was gonna dis for putting up rarities/b-sides/clean cuts. Props for the uploads man, let the haters hate and the breakers break.
ReplyDeleteI smell beef! ;-)
ReplyDeleteOther 'wrong' ways to mourn include: Creating a tribute song that you didnt write, dancing like a clown when performing said song, and generally just using your friend's death as a launching pad for your own career. The money, fame and notoriety gained from said friend's death will enable you to become an international star, allowing you to pimp your wares worldwide, even on a home shopping network, and enabling you to continue banging your female artists who are so 'hypnotised' by your mogul status...
Take that, take that!
*uh huh, yeah*
Blog Wars, haha!
ReplyDeleteivan continue to do ur thing sir. i stop by each day to check you out. your work is appreciated. i enjoy your material!!!
ReplyDeleteWord up, because over your post of the clean Gang Starr cuts I was able to pay homage to GURU properly during my mixshow. Otherwise no one else at my station would have even bothered to acknowledge him. I was certainly appreciative of it.
ReplyDeleteHow are youngsters who never heard the back catalogue ever going to appreciate fully an artist unless people like you post their stuff up. Most of em wouldnt have a clue to where to start....
ReplyDeleteblog battles? bring. it. on!!!
ReplyDeleteivan. i commented already but now the more that i think about it, phk dat bum! your site and your work are far superior to the competition. although i think it is because you don't do this for competition. i feel as if you do this outta respect for the game and your love of it. Wally sparks said it best! you make it possible for me to enjoy it with my kids in the car!!!
ReplyDeleteTake these fuckers to the cleaner, Ivan. 1st round KO!!!!
ReplyDeletethe fux is an unkut? herbs.
ReplyDeleteDon't pay it no mind. That Phillip dude is just jockin' Bol's steez.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't read too much into it, Ivan. I like Unkut prob just as much as you do. But this "Death" post is like the 3rd time they posted about people "exploiting" recent hip-hop deaths. For example,
ReplyDeletehttp://www.unkut.com/2009/08/no-shame-in-the-game/
http://www.unkut.com/2010/04/when-are-dedications-exploitation/
Unkut is a high-quality blog but in the end, they are just a blog and doing the same thing as tribute by dissing a "tribute".
Oh well. Time to move on...
Unkut bitch faghot niggas
