1. Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II
2. Mos Def - The Ecstatic
3. DOOM - Born Like This
4. Brother Ali - Us
5. Souls of Mischief - Montezuma's Revenge
6. Method Man & Redman - Blackout! 2
7. Brother Ali - The Truth Is Here [EP]
8. Eminem - Relapse
9. KiD CuDi - Man on the Moon: The End of Day
10. Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3
11. UGK - UGK 4 Life
12. J Dilla - Jay Stay Paid
13. K'naan - Troubadour
14. k-os - Yes!
15. Fashawn - Boy Meets the World
16. BK-One - RĂ¡dio Do Canibal
17. Saigon & Statik Selektah - All In a Day's Work
18. O.C. & A.G. - Oasis
19. Marco Polo & Torae - Double Barrel
20. La Coka Nostra - A Brand You Can Trust

You gave Raekwon #1? Damn I knew you liked him but i had no idea you were on his dick like that lol.
ReplyDeleteAnd you honestly thought jay-z's blueprint 3 was better than K'naan's album? you must be smoking dust.
Bro so the black out two wasnt shit huh big fella
DeleteUuummm... relapse was trash bro even slim said it was meh come on i like shady to bro but no dope =a medium drop in talent for him every one knows that
Deleteyo i feel bad about my first comment.... but you still must be smoking dust my heebes.
ReplyDeleteOkay, smart guy. Who deserves the #1 spot then?
ReplyDeleteAs for Jay's placement on this list: the reason he's up here is due in large part to great production and the magnanimity of the album itself. Even though I consider it a lower-tier album within Jay's catalog, it's still damn good and fun to listen to. Lots of growers on that album. K'naan is great, but his album didn't grab me the same way. I know I'm not alone on this...
thanks for the top 20 instead of top 10 per year. at least many got a shot in your list. 8 through 10 pisses me off but at least k-os, coka, and souls got in, personal taste may differ on placement.
ReplyDeleteCan I make a BOLD Statement and say Rhymesayers Entertainment is single-handedly keeping hip hop on the level?
No Slaughtehouse, Rakim, Cunninlynguists, BlacRoc, BlaqPoet?
ReplyDeleteI dunno, I'm just saying - Slaughterhouse to me was the nest album of the year, and Rakim deserves a top 10 finish. I might even throw Poe Picasso in the mix. What you think?
No Tanya Morgan? And i would've thought Fashawn would get a higher finish as well. Still a solid list though, BP3 is a grower.
ReplyDeleteNice list. I forgot about that Souls of Mischief album.
ReplyDelete@tj
There's no way Seventh Seal deserves a top 10 finish, hate to say it but that album was borderline drink coaster-status.
@mookie
ReplyDeletePersonally i think Rakim's was better than the likes of Relapse (too much of that fake voice and clowning around), Meth and Red (they could have done better - Blueprint 3 could have been better too), Kid Cudi (over Seventh Seal??), Saigon?
But I guess it boils down to opinion cuz I know some folk who say Young Money album was dope.
generally is a good list..might make my own and feel free to comment
dept41.blogspot.com
On tracks of the year, i bet we all agree - Exhibit C - Jay Electronica??
But black out one was fire ass fuck we can agree right
DeleteC'mon,Rae's album is mundane. He sounds like he's bored with his own shtick. I mean how many raps can you spit about the same shit? I try giving it repeated listenings but always fast forward each track about 30 seconds in. In the end the album, like a lot of Wu's stuff after 1997's Forever album, hurts their rep IMO and therefore I don't wanna hear someone shooting their own dog.
ReplyDeleteYou know what I did in protest? I went back and started listening to all the original Wu material and all still holds up. Cuban Links 2 couldn't hold up a plastic bag in a closet. =/
Btw I'm also of the opinion that the track Knuckleheadz from the first Cuban Linx is the dopest of any and all Wu tracks ever produced.
ReplyDeleteM.e.t.h.o.d.m.a.n
Deletedid we forget about clipse?
ReplyDeleteI am surprised you forgot A&E by Ace and Edo G, which is much better than a lot of the albums in your list. Other than that, lists are written to disagree...
ReplyDeleteToo add to the list of bitching, Cormega, Finale, and Skyzoo's album all were much more deserving for a spot on the top 20 then a lot of these picks.
ReplyDeletei'm not mad at this list. i am a little surprised by some of it. i'm assuming diamond district and tanya morgan would've made the top 25. right? peace
ReplyDeleteEvery album that's been mentioned that DIDN'T find its place on my top 20 list WAS taken into consideration. What can I say? There are only 20 slots to fill up and they were...
ReplyDeleteThis is my list. There are many like it but this one is mine. My list is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my list is useless. Without my list I am useless. I must post my list true. I must list straighter than other bloggers, who are trying to out-blog me. I must post lists before he posts lists. I will. Before blog I swear this creed: my list and myself are defenders of the internet, we are the masters of our blogosphere, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no internet, but peace. Amen.
good list but for the love of God, and music where is TAME ONE Ivan???
ReplyDeleteplease check out his album "acid tab vocab" when you get the time its mind blowing!look up molly or anxiety attacks on youtube. wb
Damn man, this is a real dope list. 2009 was a great year for hip hop! we actually made a list of our own for the top 10 albums of the year which had a couple overlaps but also some new stuff too:
ReplyDeletehttp://da-what.com/2009/12/31/end-of-year-top-10-albums-of-2009/
we also made one for the top mixtapes of 09:
http://da-what.com/2009/12/30/end-of-the-year-top-10-mixtapes-of-2009/
and a list for who we thought had the best year of 2009:

we would appreciate it if you checked it out and left some comments. tell us what you think!
good list but for the love of God, and music where is TAME ONE Ivan???

The BEST list i've seen all over the net....props for the bro ali love and the knaan and the mos def recognition..
ReplyDeleteBEST list out there...
Rick Ross - Deeper Than Rap
ReplyDeleteSlaughterhouse
Cormega - Born and Raised
were my fav albums of 09.
No shout out for So Far Gone? And Relapse and Man on the Moon were definitely not top 10 material, imo...especially considering that Slaughterhouse wasn't even in the top 20, apparently.
ReplyDelete@walter
ReplyDeleteFor the 849275842 time, So Far Gone is not an album.
@Decapitatah: Drake made a mixtape, that shit sounded LIKE an album... lol.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm glad Truth Is Here EP got mentioned, that ish was dooope. I would have put Cudder a little further down on the list, but it gets style points for silent Sci-Fi movies being played in the back ground during produciton.
The only album I really have an issue with not being there is Royce Da 5'9's Street Hop. Seems like everyone is leaving it off their top lists and would like to hear why you did that too...I personally think it's Top 5 album of the year...and I'm kinda shocked nobody else likes it all that much I guess?? I like it better than the Slaughterhouse album.
ReplyDelete7th seal was weak... kid cudi? what about ghost? clipse? phil the agony's "think green"? it sounds like this list was rushed
ReplyDeleteRoyce's album, like Cormega's, was solid but not great. 7th Seal was a disaster. Ghostface's album was a joke. Clipse was decent (read our review) but far from the top 20. I like Phil the Agony, but did ANYONE actually talk about Think Green? I didn't. You'd be hard pressed to find others that did.
ReplyDeleteSlaughterhouse was pretty good. 21-30 material in my book. Drake's MIXTAPE doesn't belong here. Rick Ross had great production and a couple of catchy tracks. That's it. Overall, also 21-30 material. Tame One wasn't even worth mentioning IMO.
In short, no, this list wasn't rushed.... at all. I've been following hip hop very closely the entire year, pleezbaleevit!
i definetly think wale's album deserves to be up there more then kid cudi's
ReplyDeleteNope.
ReplyDeletehttp://therapup.uproxx.com/2009/11/tru-brain-trust-reviews-attention-deficit.html
well quiet justified list
ReplyDeletehiphopblog.com
A list is a list. If you follow Ivan, what else did you expect? I could of guessed a good 6 out of 10, that would of made Ivan top 10. Sheeeet, what else did you expect, but Cuban II to be number 1??? Really??? One thing I can def say is this is vintage Ivan. Just thought I put that out. Plus, on other sites they often pander to the masses, and thats why you will see similiar list thoughout the net. But on that note, I totally disagree with list, but again this may be byproduct of my taste, but thats hip-hop for you. An album I may feel, you may not, but that the beauty. As long as you can defend your choices, I ain't got no problem with your list.
ReplyDeleteThese are great artists! I am an up and coming hip hop rapper. Check out my website: www.facethamusic.com. There are 14 free tracks on there. Please sign up!!!! FACE
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why Blackout 2 is on everyone's top 50. I wasted my time downloading that shit and it simply SUCKS!!!
ReplyDeleteMeh, it didn't suck to me. It took a while to grow on me; I was a little disappointed when I first listened, but take "Dope Nigga" (among other gems.) That shit was just as vicious as Red and Mef spittin' on Black Out (song). I was happy with A-Yo's placement on the best songs of '09 too. I gotta admit "This Is 4 All My Smokers" blew a little more than weed smoke tho.
ReplyDeleteSha Stimuli-my soul to keep & Raekwon's OB4CL2...the only 2 albums I bought this year need to be in any top 10
ReplyDeleteWell said, anon. Vintage Ivan indeed. I never change, this is [Ivan] every day.
ReplyDeleteNo Wale.... Dang.
ReplyDeleteKinda too biased towards Rae. My man Mos deserves the #1. I don't think Cudi's album is rap, it's more electronica than anything, though still stellar. And both K'Naan and k-os should be in the top 10, and Slaughterhouse deserves the top 20 at least.
ReplyDeleteWhut up Ivan!
ReplyDeleteI won't hate. I dig the list alot. All i will say is that i would move Fashawn's album up some and add Skyzoo's album to the list. But no biggie, you got double barrel on the list.
check out FACE, a new rapper from brooklyn who just released his first demo. he plans on dropping his first original album later this year. he's got a lot of talent. listen to his songs for free on his website:

Good to see DOOM getting some shine with that release. Torae is on point throughout Double Barrel. Nice list- keep the Real Hip Hop alive...
ReplyDeleteGood list. Many people left off Eminem, claiming it grew old quick, but I didnt think so. You shouldnt have included the Ali EP though, unneccessary use of a space on an "album" list. Kid Cudi a good inclusion too, highly underrated. Clipse needs to be on this though IMO. Don't sleep on the UK either, good albums from Lewis Parker and Foreign Beggars that deserve places on any year end list.
ReplyDeleteAwesome list. I can dig it.
ReplyDeleteRespect the man's list! Nice!
