First Peek: Nappy Roots - The Humdinger

If it wasn't for the late release date of this album -- in other words, if this album was released in June or early to mid-July -- this might very well have been my summer album. The Humdinger popped onto my desk today, and I haven't stopped listening ever since. The Humdinger is Nappy Roots' third album, dropping five years (!) after their last official release. They're back with soulful crooner Anthony Hamilton with yet another hit ("Down 'N Out") and a bunch of other feel-good cuts to keep you moving. From the uplifting ("Good Day") to the frenetic ("Panic Room"), Nappy Roots exemplify what a GOOD Southern rap group should sound like. The Greg Nice-assisted "No Static" has already been making its way around the web, gaining approval and praise. Straight outta Kentucky, Nappy cut loose and gives props on tracks like "On My Way to GA" as well as to the coast with the most on "Kalifornia Dreamin'" featuring Slick and Rose (you know what it is). No longer signed to Atlantic, Nappy Roots are officially independent, so keep that in mind when you're at the record shop and wanna support live hip hop. Take my word for it: The Humdinger is the album to get at the moment. Still a skeptic? As usual, check out some of these preview tracks:
