Myspace Mondays with... Crumm

Crumm

"Hip hop didn't die, it just lives in the South!" "Quit hatin' the South!" You know, if it wasn't for some of the Dirty Dirty's true emcees, these catch phrases would hold absolutely no weight. But it's hip hoppers like Crumm who backs up these statements with valid justification(s). If you're like me, you first heard about Crumm on June 28th, 2008, thanks to a video circulated extensively across the web by World Star Hip Hop. In the video, the fresh-faced Augusta, GA emcee went in on his track '100 Years in Tibet', a lengthy performance droppin' a no holds barred, multi-syllabic exhibition reminiscent of some of the greats. Instantly, I was hooked. Personally, I tend to lean towards the East Coasters; picking up on the heat on the streets of up-and-coming NY (mostly) emcees, I'm proud to say that I was a fan of cats like Papoose and Gravy when they were still relatively unknown. But I've never anticipated a Southern emcee's rise to fame: and Crumm may just be that Down South brotha to boost my credentials. It might be selfish and just downright ignorant to assume that the South has absolutely no talent, and Crumm definitely proves otherwise. If his words don't pull you aside then you must not be listening hard enough. Like MIMS, Crumm's name is an acronym: 'Creating Riches Using My Mind'. Unlike MIMS, Crumm's got talent. Turn it up!

P.S. Crumm recently followed up on his first video with yet another clip featuring his skilled writing/wordplay. Check it out:

  1. i can't wait until dude gets his grammar straight, and that ain't hate. that's just calling on dude (who definitely has skill) to sharpen his sword. just throwing a bunch of big words together sounds like a blurb of blah after a while. there's a difference between spittin' technical thought and really putting together a thought provoking piece, and sounding like you're just thumbing through a dictionary, saying "yo, that's a hot word. it says here it means "bring back to life", but i was looking for a word that means "i make history". shit, it rhymes, fuck it! cha-chiiiiiing!!!"

it's getting a little better, though, so that's a plus. my thing is, you putting yourself out there as god mc and you rhyming like evan almighty. you gotta earn those stripes, homie. i'm just wanting to get that diamond that he obviously can deliver from those lumps of coal he's spittin'...

  5. Get's his grammar straight? You can not be serious. I am not a hip hop or rap fan - at all. One of my students sent me this link and against my better judgement I decided in view it. I am very pleased that I did. I have in my years never heard of a any music artist reference the "19th Century pennings of Hargrave Jennings." And I must admit that I laughed aloud, when this artist described himself as "nicer then the base word itself before it was derived from Latin." The gentleman who refers to himself as SECONDBEST21 has done this artist a great injustice in his critique. Not only is this young man's grammar impeccable, it is clear by virtue of how his sentences are constructed that this is not loose jargon stitched together with a rhyming dictionary. To suggest that this is not thought provoking work is simply rubbish. The only thing that is not thought provoking is the hackneyed suggestion that "dude" is in need of sharpening his sword. Sharpen your wit, Sir. His Sword is deadly enough as is!
