Aside from the fact that I've got personal ties to both Cali and the Mo', I've always been intrigued by the stylistic connections between these two musical hotspots, starting off with the one and only...

Over the weekend, I came across an excellent mixtape (sounds better than most rappers' albums) simply titled 'Caltroit.' Spearheaded by West-coast legend DJ Warrior, Inglewood's up-and-comer Bishop Lamont & J Dilla torch-carrier Black Milk (whose 'Popular Demand' I reviewed earlier this year), 'Caltroit' is a Hip-Hop family affair. Word to Sly Stone.
'Caltroit' features great 'troiters like Phat Kat, Royce Da 5'9", Guilty Simpson, Illa J, T3 and others; Cali boys like Rass Kass, Planet Asia, Mistah Fab; and everyone else in between like Busta Rhymes, Stat Quo & Kardinal Offishall. All that, just to name a few... And if that wasn't enough, Mr. Invincible/Invisible himself, Dr. Dre, co-signs the record on track 3, 'On Top Now'.
Here are a couple of preview tracks that I think you might like:
F*ck it... Though DJ Warrior posted it up on his Myspace page, you can cop the whole album right here as well (I've posted plenty of mirrors):

I know you're used to people giving you props and everything and I'm not against what you do. It's just lame that you don't seem to be uploading your own records or CDs. I know firsthand because you've lifted stuff I've ripped and put on forums more than once. I put them up for heads to listen to, but it's offensive when someone else puts my records up as if they're their own. Is it too much to ask that you admit to your readers that you're in forums and boards begging for mp3s all the time?
ReplyDeleteI'm not tryin to diss, but think about it. That kind of digging takes no skill or musical knowledge whatsoever. Online searching is for wack ass bitches who think they know something about digging. I respect cats who get filthy in record stores looking for albums. I'm not saying that you don't ever do that, but it seems to me like you're using forums and search engines a whole lot more than anything.
I'll be impressed when you start putting up your own collection. Until then my verdict is that you're nice with the search engines and you're slick at copping from people who actually own a lot of albums and CDs.
I don't think there's anything wrong with digging through forums for music. I don't know what you claim I've stolen from you, and the only MP3 I've ever PMed someone for in recent memory was the final song for the recent Liquid Swords sample set...
ReplyDeleteAnd why would I post up 'my collection'? I don't even know what you're talking about...
Music bloggers who can seriously call themselves diggin' in the crates are sharing from their own collections. There are spots that will weed out things they've found trolling the internets. I think they're usually called aggregators.
ReplyDeleteI'm not trying to be rude son but calling what you do diggin In The crates offends me. You're a googler.
I'm sure you have good intentions, but think about it again. Crate digger or an aggregator? Crate diggers have some relationship to their records. Aggregators get a list of samples and start trying to find them. What you're doing is running all over the internets to collect tracks so people think you have a lot of music and know something about it. That's what I thought when I first started coming here.
It's not complicated. All I mean is that it's a fraud.
^WTF?
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter whether you aggragated it or dug it - your sample posts are what they are - i don't think people are too bothered how you found them...just my two cents.
That Dre track is a banger!
Sciss'
ReplyDeleteOhhhhhhhhh! So you're taken by the whole Diggin in the Crates label? Well, that's understandable, I suppose.
But think about it from y perspective: I'm a full-time student who works and also runs a blog. Obviously I don't have time to rip my vinyl or CDs.... Besides, the Diggin in the Crates label is merely an ode to the DITC Crew outta New York. R.I.P. Big L.
I take offense to you calling me a fraud.... SMH
so for all the samples that ivan has posted, you want him to find the original vinyls for them?
ReplyDelete...
son you must have lost your mind, if your offended by the blog stop coming here.
I didn't call you a fraud. I said the whole crate digging concept was a fraud. There's a major difference. I have no problem with you at all. Just trying to tell you my personal opinion. No need to act like a woman about it.
ReplyDeleteI get the whole DITC connection, but you're not using it that way in this context. You're using the phrase to imply that you're digging in some actual crates to discover breaks and samples. Maybe it's all just semantics to you, but I think record collecting is an art. It's like saying you're an artist when you're only tracing someone else's picture. Ya dig?
I'm not trying to pick with you personally Ivan. I see a lot of people doing this same thing and maybe I'm just bitter because I have 12,000 records and nowhere to sit down.
Aight man, to each his own. It's just the name of a label/tag to keep my posts organized. "Downloads" just doesn't have the same pizzazz, knah'mean?
ReplyDeleteregardless of this arguement, this album is one of the best of the year
ReplyDeleteAlright Ivan. Pizzazz factor understood. Peace.
ReplyDeleteAs for you Raida, I never said I was offended by the blog so why do I have to stop coming here? I like this blog. Just because I have strong opinions about certain shit doesn't mean it's not one of my favorite blogs. I come here all the time and it's the one thing I don't like. I told Ivan my thoughts on the meaning of DITC in my opinion. That is what the comment box is for, right? Opinions?
What is this man, a dictatorship?
What up Ivan..
ReplyDeleteDon't listen to the haters, just keep posting good music and do you kid! I'm a student too and these exams have been killin' me.. I just peeped this tape today and I'm feelin' it.. Nice post, peace!
