Diggin' - Top Shelf 8/8/88

(High-quality, full-sized scans included in enclosed file below)

I had a bit of an ol' skool revival over the summer, doing my best to take it back to the roots: a good thing to do once in a while.

Anyways, if you were paying attention to exclusive Hip-Hop releases coming straight from Japan (I'm talking to all 4 of you!....okay, maybe a bit more) you would have heard about Top Shelf 8/8/88, an alleged compilation of hidden gems from Hip-Hop's late golden era. I say "alleged" because it's uncertain as to whether or not these songs were actually rapped and wrapped up in the late 80's or not. An in-depth article over this speculation was written a month ago. And no, not on some fellow Hip-Hop nerd's quizzical blog. I'm talkin' New York Times big (LOL...).

All the theories aside, this album is nonetheless an exceptional assortment of joints from some of Hip-Hop's giants and heroes.

Here is the full tracklisting:

01. Fab 5 Freddy - Intro
02. Black Sheep - I'm The One
03. Big Daddy Kane - Like That, Y'all
04. Biz Markie - My Name Is...
05. MC Lyte - Listen Up
06. Grand Puba - Let's Go
07. Smooth B Of Nice & Smooth - I Want My Money Back
08. Graig G - Catch A Lyrical Beatdown
09. Chubb Rock - Chubb Rocks The Party
10. Special Ed - This Mic
11. Doug E Fesh - It Ain't Nothin
12. Jungle Brothers - Back In The Jungle
13. Just Ice - I Run The Streets
14. Melle Mel & Grandmaster Caz - The Battle Is On
15. Master Ace - Revolution's 'Bout To Start

Like I said before: forget the theories and speculation! This is a string of 15 "new" tracks from Hip-Hop royalty!

Anyways, the reason I'm busting in here over a month late, talking about some rare (and apparently sold-out) album that lots of other great blogs have covered, is that I'm offering up a link.

Cuz I'm cool like dat! © Digable Planets
