"They say a party ain't a party 'til the West at it"

Just last night, the Los Angeles Lakers finished their regular season, reigning supreme as back-to-back top seed picks in the Western Conference. As the Lake Show doubled up, I decided to put together the second volume of our D.I.T.C. series, this time featuring a hometown hero: Dr. Dre. You might recognize some of these classic samples, many of which were the source for co-productions with beatsmiths like DJ Yella, Sam Sneed, Mel-Man and Mahogany. My aim, once again, was to present a well-rounded selection of cuts that Dr. Dre has popularized through his beats - most of which I would have never heard had he never sampled them! The tracklisting plays in an almost-chronological order, spanning over two decades worth of spun soul, jazz, and of course – funk! As for the artwork, Lakers purple and gold was a prerequisite.
Like we always do around this time, the ID3 tags are a bit different from our sample sets. I’ve removed the "['...']" data, opting towards a simpler tagging of just the original song titles. But like we did with Volume One, I encourage you to try to figure out which Dre beat sampled which of the included tracks, by participating in the comments section. So I guess the main question is: Are you up on your sample knowledge? Prove it!
The Lakers are going for the gold this year; and the party’s just begun. Enjoy… and turn it up!!

SAMPLE GAME UPDATE: Props to Soloe for tracks #2, #7, #9-#11 & #19-#21 Props to H. Bomb for tracks #13, #15-#18 & #23 Props to Jeff for tracks #8, #14 & #22 Props to Dejuan for tracks #5 & #6 Props to me for tracks #4 & #12 Props to BHM for track #3 +1 Bonus props to Eric for track #3 :D Props to no one for track #1 - not necessaryThe Amazon player embedded above contains tracks #1 through #23 EXCEPT for #22 - "Hollywood Hot". That track was sampled for "Bad Intentions" by Dre & Knoc-turn'al, hence the reason I included it as a Mid-Day Insomniacs Club post. Phat shouts to everybody who participated in HHIR's DITC sample game. See you next time for Volume Three... Which producer should we spotlight for the third installment of the series? Let your voice be heard in the comments section

I'll start things off:
ReplyDelete"Express Yourself" samples "Express Yourself"
:D
I'm hopelessly stumped on which Dre song samples Leon Haywood's "I Wanna Do Something Freaky To You."
ReplyDeleteJoe Cocker's "Woman to Woman" = "California Love"
Oh, and Bill Withers' "Grandma's Hands" = Blackstreet's "No Diggity," which Dre dropped a guest 16 on.
ReplyDelete^ Yup. He didn't produce that joint. I was hoping someone'd mention that. :D
ReplyDeleteGood one(s).
+ Chris Barber's "Petite Fleur" = "Phonetap"
ReplyDelete+ Mike Brant's "Mais Dans La Lumiere" = "Crack a Bottle"
+ "Bumpy's Lament" = "Xxplosive"
*Keep in mind that Dre didn't directly sample anything in his post-N.W.A. work, rather he had his team of instrumentalists replay the parts he liked, usually with slight tweaks.
"Parce Que Tu Crois" = "What's the Difference?" (off 2001)
ReplyDeleteHow the hell did Dre come across THIS one??? haha..
@HBomb...."I Wanna Do Something Freaky to You" was used in "Nutthin' but a G-Thang" if I'm not mistaken. Y'all is killin' shit with this kind of stuff....thought provoking and educational. Damn, that's what Hip Hop used to be!!!
ReplyDeleteI included the No Diggity track because the intro starts off with "you know I like the playettes", but I always thought they said "I like the playoffs". Go figga. :D
ReplyDeleteShould I not have included? Eh, whatever... All Dre joints....Enjoy!
BTW, nice picks everybody... we're almost there... :D
ReplyDeleteMisdemeanor= funky enough (D.O.C)<--still dope!
ReplyDeleteMothership Connection= Let Me Ride
Go Home Pigs = Guilty Conscious
The Edge = Next Episode
Haboglabotribin' = G'z and Hustlers (Snoop)
Funky Worm = Dopeman
I Got The = My Name Is??
AND THATS JUST BY READING THE TITLES...LET ME LISTEN TO THIS NOW...MIGHT HAVE MORE
^ Correct, correct, correct. "Funky Enough" was produced by Dre.
ReplyDeleteHollywood Hot = Bad Intentions
ReplyDeleteSynopsis Two = Nas Is Coming
Oh, one more: The Counts track was sampled for Snoop's "Who Am I What's My Name"
ReplyDelete^ Well done....
ReplyDeleteDamn, we're almost done here, huh? :D
Marva Whitney "It's My Thing" has been sampled alot, but Part 2 specifically is from "Fuck Tha Police".
ReplyDeleteThe Brass Construction joint is sampled on "I Ain't That 1".
Don't fuck with me on N.W.A. sample info, hah!
Yo, that Amazon thing on the RZA post wasn't there before, right? You gonna do the same for this post?
ReplyDeleteI noticed that the Dre/LL song posted below called "Zoom" claims to sample Quinc Jones' "Ironside."
ReplyDeleteI don't believe it, though... That low-tuned siren at the beginning (0:23 in the video) coulda came from anywhere, and there's nothing else in the rest of the song that sounds remotely like it originated from "Ironside."
@BHM: What the hell is "Nuthin' But a G Thang?"
I threw you a curve with that one, huh?
ReplyDeleteIt's actually from, ahem, here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Coast_West_Coast_Killas
Nice ones dejuan, and thanks for noticing the embedded Amazon player. I'm gonna add it into this post once every one figures out the samples! :D
ReplyDeleteFunk U Up = Keep There Heads Ringing
ReplyDeleteLETS GO LAKERS!!!!!
I DO BELIEVE THATS ALL OF EM'....GOOD LOOKIN ON THIS POST IVAN....WEST UP!!
ReplyDelete@ H Bomb: "Nuttin But a G Thang" was the classic track that has been number one on the radio for almost 6 months STRAIGHT on Los Angeles radio station Power 106 since it's first release [correct me if I'm wrong, Ivan?]. It's one of the most classic hiphop songs that continues to get played today all across the states. It's considered one of Los Angeles's West Coast Theme tracks, next to California Love- although this track came out AFTER Nuttin But a G Thang..
ReplyDeleteYou may know the first stance, starting off with 1, 2, 3 and to the 4, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre is at the door..."
Ahem, no one mentioned the "Funk You Up" sample... :D
ReplyDelete@Eric: Well put. I wasn't aware of the trivia about the radio spot for 6 months.
Damn, you sniped that one right off. We're done here.... Props are going up real soon.
ReplyDeletewait.. one more thing. the same Leon Haywood track was also used for "The Wash" - which was on "The Wash" soundtrack..
ReplyDeleteoh, and Ivan, SOLOE mentioned the "Funk U Up" sample.
Nice add, Eric. I loved that track!
ReplyDelete"Don't stop at stop-signs with bullet holes in 'em!"
I've never heard "Nuthin But a G Thang" in my life. Ivan, you need to post this rare gem!
ReplyDelete^ If you're not kidding, you might have to check yourself into a clinic.
ReplyDeleteNo one mentioned the Brass Construction joint, so ill make note of it..
ReplyDeleteNWA - I Ain't The One.
Ivan, I remember listening to Baka Boyz, Tito [the dude that would talk funny - top 4 @ 4], Big Boy Morning show, and I think The Beat [92.3]- back when Theo was on there- callers would call in and request that joint forever. And I remember hearing..
ReplyDelete[Radio] "Whats the number one song of the day?"
[Caller] "Snoop Doggy Dogg & Dr Dre - Nuttin But A G Thang" [and the song will drop while the caller mentions the name of the track].
Eric: Dejuan got the Brass already :D
ReplyDeleteHahaaaa Tito's top 4 @ 4... that brings back memories.
Volume 3: Pete Rock
ReplyDeleteSounds real nice.
Volume 4: Alchemist
ReplyDeleteVolume 5: DJ Muggs

VOL.3...DJ QUIK...NUFF SAID!!!....
ReplyDeleteHAD TO SAY THAT AGAIN....AND LMAO @TITO'S TOP 4 AT 4...LOL....THAT FOOL WOULD TALK FUNNY...
"AND NOW FOR THE MAIN LEBEL(LEVEL)...SUPER LEBEL....LOVEY LEBEL"....LOL!!
my choices would be- and not in any order:
ReplyDeletePete Rock.
DJ Quik.
9th Wonder.
DJ Premier.
DJ BattleCat.
but definitely, pete rock & 9th. Pete Rock is well known for his James Brown joints, but 9th's a mystery. lol.
