The dawn of a new year is always the perfect time to start fresh. That's why I'm takin' it back to basics with this set right here. What would this blog be without this album? Probably nonexistent. Either way, this album was more than just the inspiration for Hip Hop Is Read's snazzy title. It invoked dialogue; it got people talking about quality once again. Sure, Nas wasn't the first emcee to publicly lash out at hip hop's downward spiral (Andre 3000 said back in 2001), but it sparked a debate that, well, carries on today (quick side note: fuck Soulja Boy). Is hip hop truly dead? Not really. But it sho' as hell is repetitive! Hopefully now that Barack will be the president, hip hop artists will smarten up and begin acting their age. Anyways, long story short, I've wanted to put out this sample set for a while now. It's finally here. Enjoy and turn it up!!

I couldn't hear the Marvin Gaye song in "Blunt Ashes" and couldn't find the other song. Where you able to?
Do you think "Where Are They Now?" samples BDK's "Set It Off"?
I think you may have mixed up the order up there, but anyways:
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I checked nasforum.net for all the sample info I needed. I came across the tracks you mentioned, but didn't hear them at all. If someone can point out how those tracks are sampled, I'd be impressed.
I have the Polnareff track, but it doesn't seem like "Not Going Back" samples it. It's just a similar piano riff. Meanwhile, the riff on Heart's "Alone" sounds much more like it. It's probably not a sample though, just an interpolation. Maybe not even that, but at least I can hear the similarity.
Re: Marvin's "Mercy, Mercy Me". I love that song. The only way I could (perhaps) see that it was sampled, would be the part in the song with those synth-like voices (the end of the track). Still, I think it's way off. I've got a feeling someone thought it was sampled, so they included it on the list. But it doesn't seem authentic to me.
As to Kane's "Set It Off": You know that "Set It Off" samples "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved" by King James (Brown), right? That's where those funky strings comes from. If I included "Set It Off" on this set, I might as well include just about every other track that sampled "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved". Right?

These were questions I had about this set. Since I know you researched the set before you put it out I thought you would be the appropriate person to ask. Nothing more nothing less.
