A few weeks ago, I received a request for a 2001 sample set. I coulda sworn someone had done it already, so I checked The Index. I guess I was mistaken. So I vowed to get to work -- as soon as my schoolwork, which took priority, was finished -- and here's the final product. Twenty samples in all, you may have heard many of thse songs before, but some of them might surprise you. I was nearly floored as soon as I figured out what Dre did with No Doubt's "The Climb". I had always assumed it was original production, straight-up. Also worth noting, I had always assumed that the late Isaac Hayes' "Bumpy's Lament" was sampled for "Xxplosive", but as it turns out the true sample may have drawn its origin from the Soul Mann & the Brothers' cover track of the same title. I'll let you be the judge. I've included both tracks into this set just to cover the board. I'd be interested in hearing what you think!
If you'll recall, 2001 was released in 1999. This means that we may soon be approaching a decade-long span of Dr. Dre-album-free music. It's crazy how time goes by, huh? It seems like only yesterday that I was 12-years old, going on 13, with these songs ("What's the Difference", "Forgot About Dre", "Still D.R.E.", "The Next Episode"...) playing everywhere I turned my head. Or maybe it was just an L.A./West coast thing? Either way, I just can't wait to hear what Dre's got in store for us in '09. Or '10. Or '11. Or... I dunno if I can hold out any longer... Lemme end my rant by saying that this sample set is definitely worth the download; you won't be disappointed. As always... Turn it up!!

Trust me 2001 was the shit worldwide, not just just LA. I was bumpin that for months. Those tracks never got old.
ReplyDeleteI remember the liner notes in Death Row albums with 'Chronic 2 - Coming Soon' written inside. Then it was Chronic 2000. Then Death Row released Chronic 2000. Then waiting for Chronic 2001. Finally grabbed 2001 at 9:00am on release day. WAited so long for it and it didnt disappoint.
I cant believe 10 years have past waiting for Detox. Maybe, just maybe its coming this year...
Bulldog: DAMN! I knew someone had done it! I tried Googling it and only came across some incomplete set by a site I've never heard of.

DJ Mere One: Check The Index. Thomas and Kevin knocked that one out already.
Funk Doc: Fingers crossed, Doc!
I have that Soul Mann and the Brothers record, great Shaft cover album. When 2001 came out, and then when Erykah Badu used the beat too, I would play that record for people. I want to say Lil' Kim used the same sample in a song too.
ReplyDeleteDamn that No Doubt is crazy.
