In keeping with the release of Intelligent Hoodlum's samples, I felt like dropping another underestimated and over-looked album. This one comes from a group known simply as 'InI'. Spearheaded by beat master extraordinaire Pete Rock, InI hit the 'udio in the mid-90's to record this gem called Center of Attention. The record never saw the light of the day (officially at least; what would we do without bootleggers?), however, and was only released by Rapster Records in 2003. Since its "release(s)", the album has garnered a heavy following amongst underground and alternative hip hop circles. Notable lyrical content coupled with Pete Rock's great balance of smooth-as-silk and hard-as-nails production makes for a great album; and a great sample set! Enjoy!

this album is so great!
ReplyDeleteit's one of the very best moment of pr!!

ReplyDeleteThank You.
ReplyDeleteIt's awesome.
can't wait for upcoming PeteStrumentals, Soul Survivor II, The Surviving Elements and latest NY's Finest sample set.
One of the great hidden/unreleased gems of the 90's. Fantastic job yet again, Ivan. Although, correct me if I'm wrong, I believe Special Ed's "Think About It" was also sampled in Think Twice ("So sucka MCs / please think twice") as well as Biggie's "Juicy" on Life I Live ("Damn right, I liked the life I live").
ReplyDeleteWas wondering when this set was going to be posted. I love this album and was mad it was not given its proper due. Nice Set, Ivan.
ReplyDeletejohn d: Yeah, that's true. We just went with the beat and drum samples on this one.
ReplyDeleteI have an O.G. copy without a bar code....great mid 90's music.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome choice for a sample set. It's already one of my favourites.
ReplyDeleteOne quick nitpick - there's got to be a couple samples for "What You Say", one of which most definitely sounds like David T Walker's cover of Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay". You can listen to it here: http://www.imeem.com/2na/music/ntfiS2KM/david_twalker_lay_lady_lay/
New to your site, sounds great though!
ReplyDeleteThe "Fakin' Jax' sample is a Dorothy Ashby joint. I want to say from Afro Harping.
