Viva Fidel!

Fidel Castro turns 83 today! I came up with the above illustration in 2008, my first attempt at playing around with Adobe Illustrator (along with a few others for Dr. King, Che Guevara and Cornel West). Though he's stepped down from power in Cuba, Fidel Castro continues to pen articles in the official newspaper of the Cuban Communist Party, Granma. His writings can be read here: Reflections of Fidel Castro.

P.S. Sorry for the lack of posts. Life has been busy. Plus I'm lazy.

  2. I'm pretty sure nobody here would want to live in Cuba. I'll leave it at that.

  6. In Cuba people are poor--- its a tiny 3rd world country in the post-colonial world after all-- but unlike the rest of the 3rd world there is virtually no poverty.

Go visit you'll know what I mean. I have my roots in the West Indies. Living in America, no I wouldn't want to move to Cuba, but I've met plenty of working people in Grenada, Antigua and elsewhere that envy Cuba's education and health care and send their children to study there.

I have mixed feelings about Castro. Cuba isn't a genuine, socialist nation... overall his legacy is pretty great considering the conditions he's ruling it. Doesn't mean there isn't a lot to condemn though.

  8. @Citoyen: We can thank the now (somewhat-)defunct embargo by the U.S. for much of the economic avails of Cuba.

@Anon: No, dude. Castro IS cool.

  12. retarded.

everyone talks about how great Castro is and especially when it comes to healthcare. But guess what Cubans have? Healthcare. That's it.
it's also ironic that so many Americans love the fucker when he just stripped the country (of pretty much... everything) left and right for communism. Especially during his early years when he'd use a firing squad on anyone opposing his regime.

The brainwashing has gotten to a point where nobody even knows about the protests in Iran (maybe it would reflect on the Castro regime a tad bit too much?) People can't even comprehend that there are places in the world where you can keep your own separate beliefs without getting jailed or having to get harassed, threatened, and shit thrown at your house for the rest of your life (literally). The amount the government provides for the people is equivalent to sending in an orange every month and the Castros aren't poor fuckers either. Cuba has had one corrupt leader to the next.

but yeah the healthcare is nice.
