Phat shouts to Enlight for the inspiration. I've got plenty of RZA samples I wanna share with y'all and this would definitely be a great way to do it. I've wanted to opt towards making producer spotlight sets, in addition to our sample sets. If this works out, I'll probably go ahead and make 'em for all my favorite producers (Pete Rock, J Dilla, DJ Premier, Dre, Kanye, Justo, 9th... and so on). The only question I need answered before I get into this is what the format should be for this series:
Do you want it to be in mixtape style with blended tracks? Individual songs or one long MP3? Or do you want the track-by-track feel like the sample sets? Hit up the comment section for democracy in action!

Track-by-track like the sample sets! :)
ReplyDeleteBoth, a mixtape style sample set with a mind of its own. Track to track, some full songs, some snippets. Go with the feel. That's how I listen to the sample sets. Sometimes I let the entire song play, and then other times I let the main theme/sample run and then skip to the next. Just like with a mixtape, sometimes the DJ drops just the beat or a hook, and sometimes it's a whole song, or other times it's just a hot verse and a quick mix out. Keep it moving, keep it interesting, keep it real. Just my two cents.
ReplyDeletepersonally i prefer the full length track-by-track style..
ReplyDeletebtw a dj khalil producer set would be dope

ReplyDeleteAs a big Wu-Tang fan, I can't wait for this :)
The idea is great again !
ReplyDeleteI prefer the snippet method, when the sampled parts of the song are mixed in a set, but there is a cue file to
I can imagine a sample - example version too, when the snippet part from sample is followed by the producer stuff
i like track by track but the mixtape style would be dope because i cut hair in a barbershop/salon and the vibe is bananas when i play other mixtapes like this...The younger heads think its the rap version thats playin but its all originals.....i love it,plus we aint gotta worry about little kids hearin all that cursin.....U fell me?
ReplyDeleteMixtape style. As Jason@PSB stated: Keep. It. Moving.

ReplyDelete9th Wonder sample set would definitely be great! ive seen too many dilla sample sets that keeps getting torn down. i have to admit- i wish I can say that I'm fortunate to have found some tracks and love it when its being shared, but the curse of that is when other people who find them out- just on the whim without appreciation for his music is where i dont want them to be shared.
ReplyDeleteand also, its because of what dilla's mother is going through with the legal problems in regards to his estate because of his 'sampling'. that's why in due respect i dont share some of what i found- well only to those who i feel definitely deserve to know.
just my two thoughts.
but yea, a premo, 9th, pete rock, and a kev brown sample set would be great!
another thing. everyone wants you to do the 'track for track' sample set? truthfully, i think you should just do the sets like the way you've been doing them, and let your audience find the part in the song where they sampled at. That's how djs/producers do it in order for them to find that right piece, so why cant we do that?
ReplyDeleteLET THE AUDIENCE DO THE HOMEWORK. by doing it 'track for track', you're pretty much giving away the answer sheet to math problems on the test.
this will take us into the ear of the dj/producer on how they find their sample. at least i believe so. let them work for it. let them work hard. ivan, im pretty sure it took you a long time to find some of the sampled songs of your favorite joints, right? it wouldnt be fair if we dont do our part and work hard as well- including me.
Primo and Dilla creates track by track are MANDATORY :P
ReplyDeletepeace and much love Ivan!
NOOOOOO! ill just email it to you lol jk.
ReplyDeleteIndividual songs, track by track would be great!
