Skies On Fire

If you were wondering why I haven't been updating the blog as often as I usual do, the answer is not "because Ivan's house burned down"! No, I've been really busy with school: Midterms and term papers and all that jazz. Amidst my sleepless nights and coffee binges, rural areas of Southern California have been burning up! If you recall, last year I spoke about some crazy wildfires that were attacking the southland. Well, they're back at it!

There are three spots that are currently blazing and I'm right in the middle of them! The Santa Ana winds have been blowing up all the wind and my area -- along with the vast majority of the county of Los Angeles -- is caught in a valley of smoke or sorts. It's pretty wild. The sky is an odd mixture of blue, grey and orange. The smoke is unbearable, even by L.A. standards. So I'm staying indoors today and wishing the firemen of this great state the best of luck.

The issue with South California is that the terrain is that of a desert, but there's plenty of shrubs and dry brush all about the hills. Desert weather and fire are the catalysts for disaster. The past few days have been particularly dry and a Santa Ana wind kicked it. These fires were bound to happen. Now, I'm not one of those global warming maniacs -- though I do believe it exists and it's a real threat -- but this event has proven yet again the validity of the theory. I've lived here all my life and I've never seen it get this dry and hot in... November! The winds seem to be dying down, so I guess that's good news.

Oddly enough, I got back home today after a history midterm thinking I'd write up a post about the fire. For whatever reason, I was compelled to listen to the new AC/DC album, Black Ice. I hadn't heard it in full yet, so I said "Eh, let's give it a shot". Track Two: "Skies on Fire". Couldn't be more appropriate. Turn it up!!
