The Sound of Young America: Jackin' For Interviews

A while back, I promised I would do a post on Jesse Thorn's The Sound of Young America radio show/podcast. So like I did with the Onion A.V. Club, I'm going to go digging for hip hop interviews in the program's archives. Jesse gave me my first writing gig so I wanted to hip HHIR readers to the show.

These interviews are downloadable in .mp3 format, and all come high recommended. Like we always do this time, let's break these down year by year.

2008:

Brent Rollins & Gabriel Alvarez of the Ego Trip Collective

2007:

Brian Coleman, author of "Check the Technique: Liner Notes for Hip-Hop Junkies"

The Lifesavas

Sa-Ra Creative Partners

Rhymefest

Peedi Crakk

Jeff Chang, author of "Can't Stop Won't Stop", on Jay-Z

Pre-2007, the interviews were combined into single shows, with a few exceptions. So one of the guests won't always be hip hop-relevant, but the non-hip hop interviews are definitely still worth a listen.

2006:

Killer Mike

Masta Ace/comedian Patton Oswalt

Devin The Dude/Rob Bowman, author of Soulsville USA: The Story of Stax Records (direct mp3 link - left click the link and "save as")

2005:

DJ Spooky/Sharon Waxman, author of "Rebels on the Backlot"

Danny Hoch, founder of the Hip-Hop Theater Festival/Sway & Tech, hosts of the World Famous Wake-Up Show

Blowfly, the original dirty rapper/Legs McNeil, author of "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk"

Prince Paul/Comedian Maria Scheider

Blackalicious/Humorist David Rakoff

All pre-2005 shows have direct mp3 links:

Chuck D of Public Enemy
